Throughout Amphibia, Anne's relationship with her friends can get intense:

Anne, Marcy, & Sasha

  • While they were mostly for non-romantic purposes, there have been at least two blushing scenes between the three girls: Anne towards Sasha in "Reunion" and Marcy towards Anne in "Scavenger Hunt."
    • Marcy then shows some for Sasha when Anne doesn't have the heart to fill her in about what happened at Toad Tower. She says that going home is pointless unless they find Sasha. Anne is scared about how to say that Sasha betrayed her and nearly murdered Hop Pop.
  • At this point, the dynamic shown between Anne, Sasha, and Marcy feels like a Love Triangle of some sort, with Sasha being the Clingy Jealous Girl. Really, in a different context Sasha and Marcy might as well be considered Anne's Love Interests.
  • The episodes "The Third Temple", and "The Dinner" have a ton of subtext between the three with how touchy and affectionate they are with each other.
  • In "Barrel's Warhammer", Sasha's furious reaction to finding out that Anne and Marcy were hanging out together without her is played out like an angry girlfriend getting mad at her significant other for cheating or something.
  • In "True Colors", Marcy's crying speech about her, Anne, and Sasha being together forever in Amphibia could sound like something else in a different context.
  • In "The New Normal", it's shown that both Sasha and Marcy's initials were carved into Anne's bedpost. If it weren't for the BFFs part written on top, this detail would make it seem as if the two were exes of hers.
  • In "Olivia and Yunan", one of the lockers in Marcy's hologram nightmare, (which involves both Anne and Sasha) has a poster advertising Prom, with the words saying yes or yes beneath it with small hearts at the bottom.
    • Also, The Anne and Sasha fusion has a heart on its chest as well. It's almost as if the hologram's implying she's in love with them both.
  • In "All In", in a parallel to the film Tangled and its TV series, Marcy ends up waking up after Anne and Sasha's tears fall onto her face as they both cry for her to wake up after she falls unconscious from the Core being cut out of her helmet. The scene in general feels similar to that of an act of true love reviving someone, except with two people doing so instead of one.
  • In "The Hardest Thing", in the "Where Are They Now?" Epilogue, we see that, while the girls have moved on with their lives, they're still keeping close enough to celebrate Anne's birthday together and Anne's narration may imply they may be moving towards a true relationship. The final shot of the entire show is the new BFF photo the trio takes as adults. Anne is crying tears of happiness, while Sasha and Marcy are both holding her hands and looking at her tenderly. It almost looks like the two have just proposed to her.
    • There's also Anne nuzzling her chin over Sasha and Marcy's heads when they tackle her in a hug before she has to perform her Heroic Sacrifice. Her tears are even shaped like tiny hearts.
    • Matt outright stated that they remained as close as life let them and kept tabs on one another for all those ten years, and Marcy even visited them multiple times after she had to move.
    • The storyboards show us some slight changes from what we got in the episode proper, such as Anne blushing and running towards Sasha and Marcy when they surprise her at the Aquarium, instead of simply walking up to them. Also, Marcy blushes a bit when Sasha praises her webcomic. Just, a lot of blushing from everyone.
  • More fire to the flame was added for this ship when Dana Terrace, the creator of The Owl House and close friend of Matt Braly, created fan art of the trio and posted it on her Twitter account.
  • In a signing stream, Matt Braly refers to Sasha and Marcy as Anne's girlfriends. Granted, he probably meant it in a best friends kind of way, but still, considering the trio's status as the most popular ship in the series and all of the confirmed LGBT characters, which includes Sasha, shown and revealed throughout Season 3... At this point this comment could go either way.

Marcy & Anne

  • Anne and Marcy have a bit of it during the latter's debut episode where the two were very touchy-feely with each other at the beginning of the episode.
    • One moment in particular that stood out was the scene where Anne (after saving Marcy from getting hit by a rock) admits how she doesn't want to lose another friend, considering what happened between her and Sasha. Both share a Held Gaze while holding hands as Anne cries.
    • Earlier, Anne seems to enjoy playing with the top of Marcy's cape a little too much, giggling as she pulls on the hood.
    • At the end of the episode, Hop Pop tells Sprig and Polly to give Anne and Marcy some privacy to catch up with each other. The way he says it makes it seem as if the two were a couple.
  • The closeness between Anne and Marcy returns with fervor again in "The Sleepover to End All Sleepovers". Also, both Speak in Unison a few times.
    • A Freeze-Frame Bonus shows Marcy staring at Anne's lips after she hugs her in the beginning, as shown in this photo.
    • Then, in the next episode after that, Anne's dilemma of choosing whether to leave with the Plantars or stay with Marcy has a vague "family vs. lover" vibe to it.
  • In "The Second Temple" they share a single coat together after Anne throws hers away to protect them from a cardinal.
    • A little later, Anne falls on top of Marcy while protecting her again. The position they're in is mildly suggestive.
  • "New Wartwood" has a scene where Anne blushes randomly when talking to Marcy. Not to mention the soft look she gives her when they're riding on Joe Sparrow later on.
    • Later in the episode, Anne says that Marcy is "One of a kind".
    • It was later clarified that it was originally the result of a compliment that was cut for time... but what kind of compliment results in this expression?
  • "True Colors": After King Andrias reveals her secret, Marcy latches onto Anne and tells her desperately about how she gave her everything, compared to Sasha pulling away at the first opportunity. Her reaction and tone of voice feel like one of someone who's talking to a girlfriend instead of a friend.
  • The final shot of "The Hardest Thing" has a new "BFFs" photo with Anne and Marcy blushing.

Sasha & Anne

  • Anne also has some of it with Sasha, albeit of a much darker nature. In her flashback, Sasha twirls her around and urges her to "hang out with [her] friends that love [her]" when Anne tries to go home early before she snaps and intimidates her into meeting with Marcy.
  • Sasha is generally manipulative and clingy towards Anne, unwilling to let her spend any time away from her, like an emotionally abusive girlfriend rather than a friend.
    • Upon reuniting, Sasha invites Anne on a carriage ride (the carriage itself has hearts in it) with her on the way to Toad Tower. Then when Sprig asks if he and his family can join, Sasha states it's just for her and Anne.
      • To win Anne over, Sasha has Anne over for dinner (albeit with fatty and decidedly unromantic fast food) and (obviously offscreen) a shower. The next time we see the two, they're on a couch, wearing matching red bathrobes. Too bad their relationship plummets afterwards.
      • Speaking of plummeting, aside from a Heroic Sacrifice to spare Anne and the Plantars from falling down with her, Sasha dropping herself from Toad Tower could be her being Driven to Suicide from Anne breaking off their friendship.
      • Likewise during that same scene, rather than save herself, Anne grabs Sasha before she can fall from the collapsing tower. She reassures Sasha, with tears in her eyes, that her former best friend is going to be okay and Anne won't let go of her.
  • In "Toadcatcher" Sasha's behaviour and suppressing of feelings towards her and Anne's fight in the season finale and how she copes with it is way more reminiscent of someone going through a break-up than losing a friend. Her training regiment, where she destroys the dummies of the Plantars but doesn't do so to Anne's dummy, is a bit Yandere-esque, like she is enraged that they stole Anne from her.
  • In "Turning Point" Sasha swears to better herself and become someone who deserves Anne. The way she words it? By saying she wants to be someone she (Anne) deserves.
    • Once again, most of her behavior in this episode comes off of that of an ex-girlfriend.
  • A good number of their interactions in "Commander Anne" have shades of this. Such as:
    • Anne holding on to Sasha as the latter launches an attack on an enemy.
    • The loving hugs they share throughout, especially the one near the end when declaring their partnership with each other.
      • During that last hug Sasha briefly looks sadly at Anne as if she realized what she had almost lost.
    • Sasha's brief talk with Grime about handing Anne the position of a commander ends with her strongly telling him that "it's complicated", which in a different context, could sound like something else regarding the two's current relationship.
      • The scene has subtle vibes of a teenager shutting down their parent's attempt at priving into their dating life.
    • When Sasha is about to swing by with a grappling hook, she pulls Anne closer in a way you usually see characters pull their love interests. When they land you can notice Anne having her arms wrapped around Sasha.
    • The whole conflict of this episode is Sasha forcing the role of the Commander on Anne out of fear that if she's in charge, she'll end up hurting Anne again. It feels similar to how some people, after getting back with their exes, try to avoid doing what broke the relationship last time to the point of overcompensating in the opposite direction.
    • Then there's the blush Sasha has at the end when Anne praises her.
    • Really, this episode has so much subtext that it has the Fan Nickname "Commander Sashanne".
  • In "Sasha's Angels" it kinda feels as if Sasha and Anne's training was Sasha's clumsy attempt at a date. The fact the whole thing is them swordfighting is just asking for all the memes about sword lesbians.
  • In "Olm Town Road" when Sasha first draws comparison between Olm siblings and herself, Anne's idea to express her support is to grab Sasha's arm.
  • "The Three Armies" and "The Beginning of the End" gave us got a lot of Sashanne moments. Among them are the sleepover, Sasha consoling Anne, their discussion about forgiveness and of course their perfectly synchronized dance.
  • In "All In", as many people point out, this short scene looks as if Anne and Sasha were leaning in for a kiss instead of a hug.
  • In "The Hardest Thing" after 10 years time skip Sasha talking how she and Anne drifted apart in high school but kept in touch could be read as talking about their friendship, or them being Amicable Exes. Also, Sasha has a bisexual flag sticker in her car, with Matt Braly confirming her as bi. Since that confirmation, many of their above interactions have been reinterpreted as Sasha possibly having had unrequited feelings for Anne at the time, with Sasha ultimately settling on being just friends.

Marcy & Sasha

  • In "The Third Temple", Marcy and Sasha seem very excited to see each other again.
  • In "Turning Point", Sasha bitterly asks Grime why should they keep going if all two of them do is make plans that not only always fail but end up hurting people they love. Mind you, the one hurt the most by Sasha's betrayals was Anne, but Sasha also clearly blames herself for Marcy getting stabbed by Andrias in "True Colors".
  • Sasha immediately thinks of Marcy as soon as Mother Olm mentions they, too, could get cool anime powers.
  • While "The Beginning of the End" starts with Sasha not paying attention to Marcy's favourite movie, she still listened well enough to know the strategy employed by the army in the movie, and according to a deleted scene, even knew the awards it won down to the category. Once Anne helps her clear her mind on whether it would be worth it to try and save their friendship, Sasha immediately pledges to save "that lovable little nerd". She's also extremely shaken by the Core rightfully calling her and Anne out on ignoring Marcy's interests, and keeps quiet for their whole encounter after that.
  • In "All In", aside from the Darcy fight with Sasha being called girlfriend by the former, and Darcy taunting her about how Marcy really thinks of her, there's also a big moment between the two near the end of the episode when Sasha begins cradling Marcy after freeing her from the Core.
  • In "The Hardest Thing" Sasha and Marcy cling to each other the whole time after Anne sends them back on the ground. Also, in the 10 years time skip, Sasha goes to personally pick up Marcy from the airport, and they both blush when they spot each other.
  • A piece of official promo art depicts Sasha and Marcy holding hands and giving each other what can be viewed as a loving look. The really notable thing too is that every other pair walking side by side in the art, Yunan and Olivia and the Boonchoys, are canon romantic couples.

Others

  • In "Cracking Mrs. Croaker", Anne sees some old pictures of Mrs. Croaker in her youth and comments that she's hot, and when Sprig runs of to find Jonah:
Anne: Wanna stay here and look at more pictures of hot Croaker?
    Polly: You read my mind!
  • Also in "Cracking Mrs. Croaker", Anne complaining to Sprig about how she can't impress a female classmate in the past could come across as her talking about impressing a crush.
  • Most of Toadstool and Toadie's interactions through the series are full of subtext (at least the ones in which Toadstool doesn't mistreat Toadie). In "Snow Day", the two bid each other a tearful "possible farewell". And in "Toad to Redemption", they practically behave like a couple.
    • In "The Hardest Thing", Toadie is now the Mayor of Wartwood, with Toadstool as his deputy, and it's implied that they're a couple now like Olivia and Yunan.
  • "The Dinner" has a few scenes between Hop Pop and Grime that look a little like Ship Tease.
    • They even work together to protect one another during the rebellion attacks in "True Colors".
    • In "All In", Hop Pop immediately offers Grime water after he has a bad reaction to Mr. and Mrs. Boonchuy's spicy food. Later, after Andrias and Darcy are defeated, Grime is seen with his arm around Hop Pop's shoulders.
  • In "The Core & The King", some of Andrias and Barrel's interactionsnote  comes off as couple-like such as the surprise hug attack Andrias gives to the latter at the beginning and the part where Barrel gets tackled by Andrias for accidentally letting Leif go after she stole the music box.
  • Dr. Jan and Terri are shown to be a surprisingly close team once paired together, and a lot of their interactions show them being on the same wavelength and rather close, in a similar manner to the already subtext heavy Calamity Trio. Many fans even compare them to a pair of chaos loving girlfriends.
    Terri: Should we grab it?
    Jan: Oh heck yes!
  • In the episode, “Bizarre Bazaar,” Anne and Sprig end up in a “kart” race with no rules, therefore using cheap tricks is allowed. Anne used this to ask Sprig to “tongue” their opponent. He is reluctant to do so, since he hardly knows him. It becomes even weirder once it’s revealed that their opponent was actually Hop Pop in disguise.
  • In the crossover episode of Chibi Tiny Tales, Anne and Luz immediately hit it off and spend the day being very physically affectionate with each other and doing typical date activities, with the Plantars tagging along behind. When Anne is sent back to Amphibia, she breaks into tears over losing her friend, but is comforted by looking at one of the pictures she and Luz took together, hugging it and giving an adorable smile.

Marcy's Journal: A Guide to Amphibia

  • Marcy's Journal...dear god Marcy's Journal, much like Dipper's Journal from Gravity Falls, this is a half illustrated half written book meant to be a companion piece to the main story in order to give more insight onto the thoughts and motivations of certain characters, as well as extra tidbits of lore. Coming from the perspective of Marcy, and Anne when Marcy is...indisposed, we get quite the look into their thoughts and feelings about certain events and more importantly to this page, their feelings about one another, and lets just say when it comes to these three, there is a lot of love.
  • On the very first page of the journal, there's a password with the hint being that "they call me Marmar". The password is SashyAnnaBanana, Marcy's nicknames for Sasha and Anne.
  • Starting in the Journal, Marcy wonders where the other girls are, and draws a large, detailed sketch of Sasha and Anne. Behind the two, there's a smaller, more cartoony sketch of Marcy herself, looking at the two and blushing.
  • One page in Marcy's Journal is filled with nothing but Marcy gushing over how much she loves Anne, complete with a drawing of Anne surrounded by hearts and stars. The journal entry itself is very similar to that of a girl writing about her crush.
ANNE IS HERE! Anne boonchuy, my best friend from back home. ANNE! The sweetest goof who ever was! The gal who can serve a tennis ball faster than anyone I know! THE ONE WHO CAN SHOOT BOBA OUT OF HER NOSE. ANNA BANANA HERSELF IS IN THE HOUSE!
  • In a Journal entry about Marcy's worries regarding Anne and Sasha's feuding, the tension is shown by a heart with all three Calamity girls in it, cracking and fracturing in-between Anne and Sasha while Marcy looks on helplessly. Her resolve to fix the situation has a smaller heart symbol patched up with bandages, and the bottom of page has the trio off on a hypothetical adventure together, seemingly blushing.
  • In a journal entry from after Anne gets her breastplate, Marcy refer to her as "My Dearest Anne", and daydreams about a new hairdo for her with hearts around it.
  • In a journal page set during "The Third Temple", Marcy is just gushing about seeing Sasha again and how cool she looks, even going on a tangent describing Sasha's appearance with a particular focus on her eyes, like she's staring lovingly into them...
  • During Anne's section of the journal, there is a page where she talks about her history with Sasha and her feelings regarding what happened with her in "True Colors", and that entry opens with her writing a poem about her that is...hard to see as being solely platonic in nature.
Sasha. Sasha Waybright. My hero, my villain, my savior, my downfall.
  • On a page of Marcy's Journal set after the girls return from Amphibia, Marcy refers to Anne and Sasha as "my loves" and talks about how, even though she's moving away, their relationship will always be deeply important to her.
  • One of the very last things Marcy talks about in the Journal is how she thinks that she will move back to California, she mentions that Sasha told her she can stay at her house for as long as she likes, before suddenly talking about how wonderful love is.
