Heartwarming / The Unexpectables

Go To

  • Task helping push Doros into asking Willow out after it seems like she's fallen for Panic hard, especially since with that push the two of them end up being the Official Couple of the series for the longest time.
  • Greckles bond with Solly, both of them are outcasts with little purpose in life and it's made clear that finding someone else who knows that feeling comforts them a lot, the exchanging of feathers also helps.
  • The group ends up helping the city guard help find a remnant of the group the United Clergy of Orun that tried to take Solly, and attempted to kill the group. When they find the one person left behind...…. a scared, heavily burnt, and desperate cleric named Helina, who the group ends up taking pity on her plight, and the increasing clarity that she's just as much of a victim to the clergy as Solly was, and instead of jailing her, they convince the guards to have Hellina to serve as a city guard while Panic tries to help her escape the Clergy's indoctrination.
  • While at the ball, celebrating the Silver King's arrival, both Greckles and Panic end up dancing with Solly and Hellina respectively Greckles because Solly wanted him to be her first dancing partner, and Hellina in an attempt to cheer her up after Borky used her dress as an napkin.
  • Greckles comforting Remy after Remy says goodbye to his griffon.
  • The group's reunion with Remy, especially considering the group thought Remy was still captured and Remy thought the group was dead. Their big group hug after being apart for so long is incredibly satisfying.
  • The undying love of Tarask by the group, who essentially treat him like their goodest son. Culminates in the entire group going into a chorus of "awww" at his little school uniform.
  • After rescuing Anna's child the party informs her that he's actually a changeling, causing Anna to wonder if the child's father (Avryman) actually loved her, Panic, who has seen the father fall into a drunken depression when one of their other lovers got killed, assures her that at the very least, they did love her.
    • Later after Anna and Thomas are put into danger again, it turns out that the residential blacksmith Tony was a bodyguard sent by Avryman to make sure that they were safe, that ended up falling for Anna, when the party asks why Tony would do his give his life to protect a child that isn't his, he responds by pointing out that it's still Anna's and that if Anna loves him, then so can Tony, this actually hits Panic hard enough that he tries to convince Avryman to let Tony be with Anna, after moving her and Thomas to a safe house in Alivast.
  • Panic's relationship with Scarlet, when they first met she ends up mistaking him for her father (A winged Tiefling, during a time where Panic temporally grew wings due to a potion.) though the players are able to figure out that Panic has no chance to be the father, he still ends up choosing to treat her like a cross between an adopted daughter and a sister, after they end up escaping and Scarlet ends up at a local orphanage. Helping her with her issues and attending her music concerts.
  • Gruul's growing comradery with the party as they help him save his tribe from the United Clergy, starting out by barely treating Remy and Audrey better than the Clergy did, to considering Borky a brother in arms, and trying his hardest to turn Remy and Audrey into a couple, because he legitimately thinks they would be a good pairing, only stopping when Audery herself chooses Gruul for a mating partner, and makes it very clear that she's only interested in him.
  • Greckles and Brorc finally mending their friendship after spending the majority of the series being disdainful at best and out right malicious at worse due to the Solly incident.
  • Panic unintentionally unloading all of his pent up worries about his heritage, his mother and what her agenda is, and his future in the city and with Scarlet onto Rose, the Livrosean Paladin who oversees Scarlet's orphanage, is a downright heartrending display of emotional openness from Panic. It's only made better by the fact that Rose listens to all of it with quiet grace and understanding and helps him come to better terms with his nature as a Tiefling as well as his purpose now that he knows what he is in relation to Livrosea. One gets the feeling that this one coversation helped make up for over two decades' lack of maternal presence and affection in his life.
    • Even better, Rose did her best not to judge him for being the spawn of He Of The One-Body Choir, and even admitted that his harsh, dark style of music is special and unique and forms a necessary counterpoint to the lighter and prettier types of music.
  • Before heading out to Tracadia, Panic meets up with Hellina to see how she's holding up after meeting her former Paladin/fiancée Lionel, she confirms that Lionel wants nothing to do with her thanks to her scar, but she ends up noting that with all the friends that she has who care for her now, she doesn't need Lionel anymore. This is also the point that makes it clear that she holds no ill will towards Panic for scarring her.
  • The final scene we see of Rat, performing in front of a cheering crowd at the circus, and Clay throws him a bouquet (indicating that they've actually started dating.). Considering how unpopular he was when the group first met him, it's so satisfying to see him earn his happy ending.
  • After learning that Panic's mother is in the Underdark, the rest of the party makes it very clear that they're willing to help him find her, even if it means going into one of the most dangerous places in D&D.
  • Panic's reunion with Euphoria, full stop. After spending his entire life worrying that she might not love him or that she might be evil, all of that is proven wrong. Euphoria was led to believe that Panic had died as a baby, so she is overjoyed to finally see him.
    • All of their interactions afterward are just as heartwarming. For instance, Euphoria shares some of her rations with the group, and Panic gets to experience having his mom make him lunch for the first time (despite being an adult).
  • When ITH reveals that it's a fragment of LYS, Panic tries to apologies for the latter's death, only for ITH to state that there's nothing to forgive.
  • Panic's arc throughout the series is that he's not sure if he can actually love someone and be loved in return, this lasts until episode 99 where after meeting with ITH, a reincarnation of Lys, who tells him that he's plenty capable of both, as it shows Panic's bonding moments with Scarlet, Hellina, and The Unexpectables. Making it very clear that even if Euphoria didn't love him, he's already found love.
  • After Euphoria makes a comment about confronting Sergei after learning that he lied about what he did to Panic. Panic notes that he's actually fearing for his father's wellbeing, despite the fact that he has every reason to hate his father at this point, he still cares a bit for his old man.
  • Everyone's reactions to the Unexpectables returning to Alivast from the Underdark believing they were dead after they'd be missing for five months. Just about everyone they run into is excited to see them again - Hellina hugs Panic hard enough to almost knock him off his feet, Remy actually initiates a hug with Borky and their employees and friends generally being excited to see them again.
  • During their long absence, a few happy developments occurred, including Neragen getting together with Athena and Hellina becoming a full-fledged member of the city guard. Though they did miss a lot, The Unexpectables' friends and employees have been doing quite well for themselves.
  • Hellina explains that she and the Musical Menagerie were playing along with the effort to wake Omnimaw. Scarlet woke up all the kids at the Liverosea School and they played along as well.
  • Tarusk speaks, and the first thing he says to Task is "You're home!" Task also, without a trace of humor or irony, referring to Tarusk as his son.
  • Borky has a heart-to-heart with Cliff, telling him that he shouldn't be ashamed of being a big, goofy idiot cause everyone needs some levity in their lives.
  • Hassrad's major Papa Wolf reaction when he finds out that Meryl was kidnapped by the yugoloths. He's so serious about helping her, he turns down a considerable amount of gold from Greckles to find more information, stating that because they took Meryl, It's Personal. As much of an antisocial jerk as he can be, seeing Hassrad genuinely care for someone is pleasantly surprising.
  • Digsby in general upon his return for Hoketh's Harrowing.Between helping Task pray to remember his sister and letting a bunch of children climb on his shell during the medal ceremony, he's just as sweet and wholesome as we remember.
    • Digsby and Borky face off during the pumpkin jousting competition. Doubles as Funny.
Borky: This is gonna hurt me more than you, emotionally
Digsby: It's okay, I can heal you.
  • The entire wedding of Willow and Doros is an entire feel good episode. Dedicated to the party celebrating the marriage of two of the first friends they made in Alivast.
    • When it comes to giving out gifts some of the highlights include Borky giving Willow a stool so she can easily kiss Doros on the cheek and Panic giving Willow a music box playing her favorite song. Willow ends up revealing that the reason it is her favorite was because her deceased first boyfriend played it when they were together, so now she has a part of him that seems to approve of her new life.
    • When Task voices his concerns that his gifts (a high grade kitchen set and Tai's pretzel recipe recopied) don't stack up to all the other gifts being given out. Willow and Doros both reassure him that they both appreciate them immensely.
    • The fact that Borky learnt how to read in order to give out his wedding speech. Panic also didn't slouch in the preparation department considering he gets Hellina to help him set up his newly homebrewed spell so he can make fireworks for the now wed couple.
    • The ending of the episode ends on a rather dour note as Greckles ends up breaking down after seeing Doros and Willow happily wed after his date with Solly was implied to end badly, only for Remy to immediately hug him after he realizes what Greckles has been holding back for the entire episode.
  • Remy revealing to Greckles that he spent a great deal of time learning how to speak and write Avian (though still not with the same level of fluency as Greckles) to try and find information on Yukiko. Greckles in turn reveals a great deal of past to Remy, including the reasons he was exiled from his village, along with his real name. He also confessed to Remy that he doesn't even speak using his real voice. The one he uses is simply mimicry, and affects it to sound "tougher". Remy outright states he finds it adorable and gently teases Greckles about it.
Remy: Is that what you think "tough" sounds like?
  • At the Alivast "Festival of Fun", after watching Panic making a perfect performance but still strike out in romance, Task makes sure to let him know what a positive influence he's been on his life, and gives him a hug.
  • Greckles finally embraces his identity as Tobikage and tells his friends as such and Panic and Remy both start to playfully refer to him as "Tobi". Each of the party also offers honest and heartfelt advice on what to do when he meets his father for the first time and the conversation ends with Greckles reasserting that the Unexpectables are his family.
  • Task finally confesses his feelings to Winter and tells her he wants to spend the rest of his life with her, and it turns out she feels the same way.
  • In Session 182, there's the heart-to-heart between Remy and the newest ally of The Unexpectables, particularly this snippet of conversation:
Tio: They are an eclectic, raucous, rambunction gaggle of hooligans.
Remy: They're much more than that; they're family.
Tio: ...May I be part of it?
