It leads to that wonderful moment when Walter mentioned how he threw away a wallet that turned out to contain the photo he was travelling around the world to find, and now it's lost forever. To that, his mother simply ask, "You mean, this one?" as she hands him that very wallet and Walter realizes that his mother has just saved him with her eccentricities. It won't save his job, but it allows Walter to march back to the Life magazine offices to hand it to the Jerkass who fired him and give him a piece of his mind at how he has treated his colleagues.
Sean's reaction to Walter trekking all the way to the Himalyas just to find a single frame of film. This hardcore adventurous photographer is downright impressed by Walter's heroic efforts, and is surprised he would go to such lengths, affirming Sean's already high opinion of Walter as a person.
Sean tells Walter's mother that Walter is his partner and how, for the 16 years Walter worked for Life, he always showed everyone the photos the way Sean wanted them. The mystery photo, which does end up as the final cover, is of Walter himself, and the issue is dedicated to everyone who worked hard to build Life up.
