Heartwarming / The Babadook

Go To

  • Mrs. Roach showing up late one night during Amelia's possession to remind her that she loves her and Samuel with all her heart, and would do anything for them. It's even better because it's obvious that Mrs. Roach is the only person who really understands Amelia's grief and supports her, since she never told her to move on or judged her son for his troubled behavior. It also helps to count that Mrs. Roach is one of the few characters in this movie that is completely likable and friendly, in comparison to the utter Jerkasses that fill it.
Mrs. Roach: Sorry love, I know it’s late. I just wanted to make sure you’re OK... I know this time of year is terribly hard for you. And I know you don’t want me to go on about it, so I won’t... Just want you to know I’d do anything for you and Sam. I love you both. You can always talk to me love. Always.
Amelia’s face softens and saddens with every word. Her eye glints in the shadows, tears forming.note
  • By the end of the film, Amelia has started to deal with the grief over her dead husband and is finally starting to accept Sam. She's shown to allow him to start celebrating his birthday on his actual birthday and she's helping him to channel his penchant for destructive contraptions constructively.
    • Really, just the entire final scene of the film with Sam and Amelia. Their relationship has grown so much warmer and closer than we initially saw.
    • It's also quite cute how Amelia compares Sam to his father in front of the social workers. It shows she can now talk about her deceased husband in a way that keeps his spirit alive, and enjoy what makes Sam similar to Oskar as opposed to before when it just reminded her of the grief.
  • Amelia's words to the Babadook in the basement.
Amelia: Its alright. It's alright. Ssh. Ssh.
  • That the Babadook has not been purged or destroyed by Amelia, especially if you see it as an embodiment of grief or mental illness. Instead Amelia has learned to live with and accept its presence without allowing it to affect her life negatively.
