Heartwarming / Tegami Bachi: Letter Bee

Go To

  • Gauche coming around and saying that he and a young Lag are friends. It's a small but significant step from the seemingly Consummate Professional Gauche, and one that had a lasting impression on Lag.
  • Lag and his aunt, Sabrina, get a very touching moment before his departure, reminiscent of a mother and son.
  • Lag's decision to take Niche with him even though she's a Human Mail with an incomplete delivery slip, since she reminds him of himself. It goes to show how far Lag is willing to go to help other people.
  • The Kyrie storyline reveals that Jiggy didn't abandon Nelli, Nello and their town, but worked hard to help their town build a church. As a result of learning this, Nelli is able to forgive Jiggy, and decides to save up for the postage to send a letter to him.
  • After Zazie hears that Connor couldn't bring himself to tell Lag what happened to Gauche, Zazie insists that Connor apologize to Lag... on Zazie's behalf. After learning that Gauche and Lag had been friends, Zazie regrets how harshly he spoke about Gauche when unwittingly breaking the news about Gauche's disappearance to Lag.
  • While Sylvette initially asks Lag to leave and never come back, after Lag shows her Gauche's memories, she admits that she always wanted to meet him, and only was worried that his presence would reopen the old wounds caused by her brother's disappearance. The two of them, as well as Niche, end up becoming a surrogate family of sorts.
  • Dr. Thunderland Jr. developing a friendship of sorts with Gauche, whom he describes as the only person to understand him. Both men are rather dedicated to their respective jobs, as well as more caring than they let on, so it's only natural that they would hit it off well.
  • In on early storyline, a letter writer consistently tells lies to his mother, ashamed of admitting that he's a failed author. After learning the truth, his mother is touched to see his feelings, and realize that even when he'd been lying, he was always thinking of her.
  • The second opening sequence features several people reading letters from the Letter Bees, showing just how important their job is to the people of Amberground.
  • In Episodes 21-22, Gauche and Dr. Thunderland Jr. help Mana Jones, who loses her eyesight in an accident and nearly gets fired, prove that her research has value and keep her job. By the present day, she's a well-respected researcher.
  • Near the end of the battle with the Cidre Gaichuu, both Hunt and Zazie struggle to save Ann from the Gaichuu's clutches. For Hunt, it's about atoning for the part he played in her father's death. For Zazie, it's probably because he knows how horrible dying from losing your heart is, a fate he doesnt' wish on anyone else.
  • After Noir defeats Lag, Lag dreads having to tell Sylvette that her brother is a criminal who doesn't remember her. When he gets home, she tells him that she's actually happy that Gauche is alive and that Lag fulfilled his promise to find Gauche in such a short period of time.
  • In another one-shot, a woman has been receiving picture postcards of her hometown from an anonymous sender. The sender turns out to be her maid, who was a childhood friend of hers, and wanted to atone for being pressured into selling the woman's gift. Lag helps her feelings get across, and the woman recognizes her old friend.
  • At the end of the lighthouse storyline, Jiggy reveals that he got Nelli's letter, and thanks Lag for saving his sister.
  • During the Blue Notes Blues arc, there's Zazie's attempt to fight Noir and Roda. Zazie might be out of his depth against Noir, but he has good reasons for trying to take Gauche down by himself- he doesn't want Lag to face him without having fully prepared, or see the person Gauche has become.
  • After Lag gets Niche's sister to come to her senses, she remembers how much she cared for Niche, sends her to the healing spring to recover, and thanks Lag for bringing Niche to her.
  • While Roda rejects Lag's offer to pull her up to safety and seemingly falls to her death, her last act before doing so is to return Lag's letter bullet to him, implying that she's willing to support his quest to bring Gauche back.
  • After Lag's letter bullet hits Gauche, one of his first acts is to cooperate with Lag to escape a dangerous situation together by shooting Shindans together to force Cabernet to release them, effectively paralleling when they first truly became friends after defeating Buckers together.
  • Zazie asks what Lag wrote in his letter bullet to Gauche, since Lag had taken a long time to come up with what to say. Lag then replies that he only wrote that he misses Gauche. It's a short but sweet message that incorporates Gauche's belief that a single word can carry heart.
  • When Gauche wakes up, Lag and Sylvette tearfully embrace him.
  • Lag goes out on a delivery with Gauche, and while he's not at his best (bumping into a woman carrying fruit and forgetting to get a delivery stamp), Gauche sees that he's become a true Bee. The two of them get home and have dinner with Sylvette, Niche and Aria. It's a bit spoiled by the later revelation that "Gauche" was actually Noir with Gauche's memories, but it's still a nice moment.
  • In the manga, while the revelation that Gauche didn't actually come back is a Tear Jerker, he also confirms that he's started to care about the people close to Gauche, so that part of Gauche isn't gone forever.
  • Hunt and Sara return to the series later on, with Hunt working as Dr. Thunderland Jr.'s assistant, and Sarah running a talent agency for dingos, showing that they were able to start a new life and make an honest living.
  • While Episode 42 ends on a depressing note, with the Noir persona still dominant in Gauche, and him willing to kill Lag, there's some hope. Jiggy suspects that Noir refused to use his Shindanjuu against Lag lest he reveal his heart.
  • Also from Episode 42, Lag asks about the "letter" that Jiggy was asked to deliver to him, and Jiggy says himself. The delivery was a rescue mission requested by those who wanted to see Lag return safely, and they ultimately bring him home to his friends.
  • Despite starting out as enemies, Jeel and Zazie realize they are not so different and end up saving each other's lives on multiple occasions. Jeel notices that Zazie isn't motivated by the selfish desires that drive other Letter Bees, while Zazie realizes that Jeel doesn't just hate the government- he wants to protect other victims of experimentation.
  • In a mix of this and Tear Jerker, one of Zazie's Shindans actually affects Jeel. When Jeel is confused why, Zazie spells it out for him.
Zazie: The heart in that Blue Thorn I shot was neither malice, nor hatred... It was the sadness of being forced to shoot my friend.
  • In Episode 45, Lag goes to get Connor to help him hunt down Cabernet, only to see that Connor doesn't want to go back. Just as Lag's about to take Gus along as a compromise, Niche insists that Connor go too, since she believes that a Bee and his dingo should never be parted. Lag then helps Connor realize that Sunny has a little heart left, and actually helps her enjoy her cookies once again.
  • In Episode 48, Lag realizes that Gauche kept his promise and was able to find Lag's mother.
  • In Episode 49, Roda takes back her earlier comments and acknowledges that Niche is not a failure as a dingo, a remark Niche appreciates.
  • Lag, with Noir's help, realizes that even if Noir's memories of Gauche haven't returned, he's still the same kind person whom Lag befriended, and who kept his promise to Gauche, helping Lag accept Noir for who he is.
  • After the Time Skip near the end of the series, Zazie is furious that Lag has seemingly become cold and emotionless as a result of his training to defeat Spiritus, not even caring when Sylvette ends up in a sanitarium. However, when Zazie realizes that there's more going on than he's aware of, he sends a heartfelt apology letter to Lag, apologizing for his attitude and not being there for his friend.
  • The ending of the anime.
    • Noir and Roda leave to live with those who could not become spirit, but Noir says goodbye to Lag after reaffirming that they're friends, in a way that mirrors when Gauche delivered Lag to Cambel Litus.
    • Vincent Alcott finally writes a bestseller recounting his experiences in the climax.
    • Dr. Thunderland Jr. is working to help restore lost hearts, and Sunny is starting to come back to her old self, even if she can't remember Connor.
    • Zazie's cat gave birth to kittens.
  • Garrard and Valentine regaining their old idealism in time to join the fight against Cabernet.
  • When Noir arrives to help Lag in the manga, he shows that maybe, Gauche isn't completely gone.
Noir: Thank you, Lag seeing, for still calling Gauche your friend. Noir counts you as his friend, too. His first friend.
  • At the very end of the manga, Lag declares that both Gauche and his post-amnesia alter ego Noir are his friends.
