Heartwarming / Sub-Mariner

Go To

The Sub-Mariner, as wild as impetuous as he has portrayed, even he is capable of friendship and kindness.

  • Namor's fellow Invaders Jim Hammond and Steve Rogers (and Bucky too) have both shown on several occasions, if you just show Namor some respect, give him a little space and treat him with some patience; he will actually calm down, even joke with you and give thanks when thanks are due.
  • The first Christmas after Bucky Barnes is free of his Winter Soldier programming, he arranges through Nick Fury to meet with Namor at the grave of their Invaders teammate and sidekick of the original Human Torch, Toro. Namor tells Bucky that he thought the whole thing was a terrible joke. When Bucky asks him why he came, then, he says that some things are much too serious to joke about, and shakes Bucky's hand, telling him he's glad to see him, so long as Bucky doesn't try to give him a "Criss-mass" present. He asks if Bucky's seen the grave, saying that Toro died a hero, that his simple memorial doesn't do his heroics justice, and that being with him when he died was an honor. The book ends on the implication that Namor is going to sit there and tell Bucky the whole story of Toro's death, and for Namor, the respect and affirmation that he cared about Bucky and Toro and mourned their deaths is downright cuddly.
    • His friendship with Jim Hammond, the Human Torch. Jim is one of few people who can both survive one of Namor's tantrums and subdue him long enough for him to come back to his senses, and is therefore also one of few people (alongside Captain America) who knows "the true Namor"; a man who likes cooking, laughs at bad jokes and is generally a compassionate person who despises undue suffering. Invaders (2019) is all about him realizing Namor is suffering PTSD, that he let him down by not noticing it during their World War 2 days and trying to make up for it by getting the rest of the Invaders to help him. And in Namor: Conquered Shores (which is set in a Bad Future where humanity is on the verge of extinction), Namor outright admits that he considers Jim Hammond his best friend and would rather die than spend the rest of his days without him; the two eventually decide to spend their last days together at Jim's android colony.
    • Captain America remembering the time Namor called him his 'brother' during World War 2 and smiling in New Avengers #29. Even when possessed by the Phoenix in that issue, Namor decides to talk to Captain America out of gratitude for him showing some faith in him, even when the rest made a fool of him for it.
  • The Invaders (2019) comic features an World War 2 family, the Petersons, whom Namor has been best friends with for decades. Randall Peterson served alongside Namor, and named his daughter Nay after him, and she named her son Roman (Namor backwards). Whenever Namor suffered his mental issues, he could always come and see them and they'd take him in without any hesitation.
