• After Joy's death Jack takes her son and their pet dog to walk in the Golden Valley, a place he showed Joy in a painting of but had never actually visited in reality. After Joy he no longer lives life vicariously through academia but embraces it for himself, his tragic loss spurring him to enjoy the real world and the happiness of family life.
