Spoilers are off. You have been warned.

Despite the depressing atmosphere of the game, there are some light-hearted moments and beautiful moments.

  • Despite having known her for a minute at best, Kay forms a fast and lasting friendship with the Girl. In fact, one of the original reasons why Kay explores the city is to try and find her, and she is visibly relieved to see that she is okay, considering the last time they saw each other she attempted to force the woman in the shell away from her.
  • The messages in the bottles can be both heartwarming and tear jerking, depending on what point in the game you are at. Most of the time, however, the messages are always encouraging, especially since they're written specifically with Kay in mind.
  • Though she initially remained distant from his life and was more focused on her boyfriend, Kay proves she really does love her brother by telling him that she is always going to be there for him and tells him, with full certainty, that the bullies are not his friends. This, plus him finally screaming at the shadows that represent his trauma to stop, is what returns him to normal and they share a heartfelt hug.
  • Kay's parents. Though their relationship is strained, they really do love each other and their kids and try their best to put aside their arguments when Sunny and Kay are around. Sadly, it doesn't last and its implied that they eventually separated at some point in time. That said, they still love their children dearly and become distressed when Kay faints, returning to human form just for the sake of helping her get back on the boat.
  • Jack's relationship with Kay is incredibly sweet, even if it does go to hell. The whole reason he distanced himself from her was because he didn't want to hurt her any further due to some sort of mental condition.
  • Despite the woman in the shell having been hostile towards Kay up until the latter went after Jack, she clearly cares about Kay enough that she wants her to understand that, while helping someone is all well and good, its also good to know when you have to stop before you make things worse. It gets better when you realize that she is Kay's feelings of self-loathing. Think about it; the embodiment of her anger and hatred towards herself grows alongside Kay to see that she is literally trying to destroy herself so she can help her friends and family, and wants to try and stop her from breaking to the point she crosses the Despair Event Horizon.
  • The ending has things looking up for both Kay and Jack. Kay's finally got her human form back, having moved away from her own feelings of worthlessness and loneliness and is implied to have reunited with her family on an island. After the credits, Jack is shown to be on board the boat Kay had been traveling in and now has a humanoid form instead of his wolf-like one, now sporting blue eyes like he did before, implying that he's well on his way to recovering from his own issues like Kay was.
