- Ingemar has to sleep at Mrs. Arvidsson’s place because there isn’t enough room at Uncle Gunnar’s. As he prepares for bed, he thinks to himself:"Time heals all wounds," Mrs. Arvidsson says. Mrs. Arvidsson says some wise things. You have to try to forget.
- Ingemar coming out of the summer house to observe the ice swimmer with the other townspeople. Afterwards he and other kids go to the glassworks house and warm up in front of the fire, which symbolically forebodes hope for the future.
- Saga and Ingemar falling asleep together during the boxing match at the end.
