Heartwarming / Garfunkel and Oates

Go To

A lot of Garfunkel and Oates songs although they are funny, they can really tug upon your heartstrings and also could potentially be a tearjerker to some tropers.

  • One of the duos first songs "Only You" is a cheery heartwarming ditty of two best friends who doesn't care what the world throws at them, as long as they have each other and no one else. Even though it is a comedy based song, it is pretty heartwarming to view this song from a modern perspective now knowing the success that Garfunkel and Oates have had with their own TV Show, Netflix special, appearing in Hollywood films, having hit side projects among other things and still remain the best of friends for over TEN YEARS! A true ode to friendship. "We can tell all of those other fucking cunts to go to hell and when we're sixty we'll get facelifts like Burt Reynolds/Joan Rivers."
  • "Rainbow Connections", a song about gay marriage. Both the official video and the show version are beautifully done. During their Netflix special, the duo dedicated a small improvised performance of the song to a couple who Kate couldn't make their wedding to sing this song live due to a bad storm. The song also makes Riki choke up at one point 'It's our own song you can't cry'.
  • "Places To Rest", could also be a contender for Tearjerker too. A different change of pace for the duo at the end of their first album All Over Your Face details the experience of sharing one last night with a lover who doesn't see the flaws you see in yourself and anxiously waiting for the day they realize they could have someone better, younger and prettier but happily sharing the moment with each other, potentially for the last time. The version recorded solo by Riki is also heartwarming and heartbreaking at the same time.
  • "My Apartment's Very Clean Without You, a somber breakup ballad in which the narrator details getting rid of her ex's belongings yet missing their messy presence in their apartment. Although it has plenty of dark humor in the song to keep it somewhat comedic by saying her loss isn't as big a deal as famine in Africa or genocide in Darfur, however the song does remain very sad as the narrator laments saying her "new bed feels to big without you" and "a home is just a house without you."
  • "As You Are" is another heartwarming song taken from the duo's first EP Music Songs. It's about reassuring a person that you know (whether a friend, partner, spouse, relative, whomever) that they are worth more that they feel they are, even if they cannot see it themselves. "Take me in. Believe me when I say. You’re more than just okay You’re perfect… as you are."
  • "Frozen Lullaby" although this song is mostly comedic, it is heartwarming to hear that this is based on Riki's own experiences of getting her embryos frozen. The song details a mother and child having the "birds and bees" conversation but from the perspective of a test tube baby. The song is very darkly comedic (especially the last verse which blends itself into Nightmare Fuel), however the message of the song is still pretty uplifting that even without a male parent to be a father figure for Riki's child, she will always have her mother by her side (as long as she gets rich enough to do the procedure of course).
  • "I Get To Do It With You" is another cheery little ditty plenty full of geeky references and historical jokes like 'If we meet a droid, I'll R2-D2 it with you'. A nice closer to the album Secretions which has most of the duo's most risque songs but yet has a heartwarming trilogy of songs near the end of the album which includes "Rainbow Connections" (mentioned above) and "You Go First".
  • "Such A Loser" and it's music video from the IFC series is a true anthem for the underdogs in life who are overlooked by the winners in society. There's no shame in being a loser as they deserve their own cheering section too and how it is better to be a 'loser' and try something and fail at it then being a 'spectator' who laughs at your failure even though they accomplished nothing. Not to mention it is the perfect closing song for the IFC series seeing Riki and Kate in their own 'Kazoo Parade' performing this song after a rough period during the show's two part finale 'Eggs' and 'Maturity' and sadly is a great final closer to the cancelled IFC show too.

Even some of the duo's solo songs can be also considered Heartwarming

  • Although a humorous song dedicated to a sandcastle sculpture of Conan O'Brien, Kate wrote a little short and sweet song dedicated to her little date with the sculpture before it got swept away by the tide. Even Conan looked visibly touched by this song.
  • Kate also wrote a song dedicated to her dog Jack aptly titled "For My Dog, Jack" to celebrate his six year anniversary.
  • Just Say When is also a tearjerker and a heartwarming ode to a lost relationship.
  • Riki's humorous yet honest F.U. against Hollywood's beauty standards in Pretty In Buffalo can be also considered a heartwarmer to some.
  • Just Because You're Not is a sad closer to Riki's EP "Yell At Me From Your Car" detailing a bad breakup but yet is a hopeful one of moving forward from a relationship knowing that there's someone you can never have yet you are happy for them to move on.
