    Book 1: Minimum Wage Magic

  • Opal manages to convince Nick not to sell the cockatrice chicks, simply by appealing to his better nature.

    Book 2: Part-Time Gods

  • The prologue makes it clear that, despite Yong being terrible about showing it, he deeply loves Opal and truly does think of her as his daughter. In particular, what's the thing that makes all the expense worth it? Her smile.
"But you just said I'm a dog face," she said dejectedly. "I can't even do magic right."
"This is true," her father said, carrying her out of the throne room. "You are indeed a foolish puppy who will never be what I was promised. But despite your many flaws, you are still my Opal, and I take care of what is mine."
His daughter still looked worried. "Always?"
"Forever," the dragon promised, pressing a kiss to her forehead as he carried his greatest treasure back into his lair.
  • Even his insulting nickname for her, "dog-face girl," takes on a new light when it turns out that she used to find it hilarious. She always giggled whenever he called her that.
  • Likewise, Yong breaking his deal with Opal. While she of course focuses on the whole "locked in a closet" thing, the fact remains that Yong decided Opal was more important than money, pride, his reputation, and even his life.
  • Julius takes the time to point out to Opal that in his public statement, Yong referred to Opal as his daughter. Not his "treasure," or his "human," but his daughter. Yong has never thought of her as anything but that.

    Book 3: Night Shift Dragons

  • When Yong witnesses Opal using shaman magic (which he had always dismissed as "not real magic") to successfully cast a spell for the first time he's ever seen, he looks like he's never seen anything more impressive.
    Yong: That was incredible, Opal.
  • Opal told Nik that she was born because Yong wanted an "upgrade" for her mother, who was perfect in every way except not a mage. There are lots of creepy Wife Husbandry implications in that. It turns out the truth is rather simpler: Yong's consort wanted a daughter, and Yong wanted her to be happy.
