Heartwarming / An Adventure in Space and Time

  • Initially, Hartnell comes off as gruff and a little temperamental, a bit like the First Doctor really, then he explains the show to his granddaughter while he practices his lines, then you see part of the Doctor we all come to know and love.
    • Later when he's playing with the children in the park is just the sweetest thing and goes to show how he's come to enjoy playing the Doctor.
  • Hartnell insists he needs the set to properly rehearse because he wanted to map out all the buttons on the console and their functions. His logic being that it wouldn't look right if he pressed a button to open the doors one episode, and then used a different button to open the door in another episode. When asked if it even mattered since the console is a mess of buttons to begin with, Hartnell stated that the children watching would pick up on it if they tried to bluff it. Even when he was still unsure about the role, he gave it everything he had.
  • There's something innately adorable about watching children pretending to be Daleks, especially Hartnell's granddaughter.
  • The fact that this was made is heartwarming. It's basically one massive fanfare to William Hartnell and the people behind Doctor Who's birth.
  • The Behind the Scenes video, everyone just saying how what a joy it was working on this and how in awe they are at how this was made, and the ending where they wish Doctor Who a happy 50th Anniversary and wish the show 50 more.
  • Hartnell's heart-to-heart with Carole Ann Ford as she says she's leaving the show.
    • Earlier, filling her dressing room table with roses and an apology note after he realised he'd upset her.
  • As much of a bombastic Large Ham that is he is, Sydney does his best to be as gentle as possible when he tells Hartnell he has to leave the show.
  • At the end of his tenure, Hartnell looks across the TARDIS console to see Matt Smith, the Eleventh Doctor, smiling back at him.
    • More so, the smile Matt gives him basically says, Everything will be fine, in fact, it's been brilliant.
    • The scene itself was a reference to an anecdote attributed to Carole-Ann Ford, who said that before the show even started, Bill turned to her and said "This is going to go on for ever," itself a heartwarming moment. Matt's appearance was a visual representation of Hartnell's prediction.
    • For the show's 60th anniversary, this scene was updated to feature Ncuti Gatwa, the Fifteenth Doctor, in what was actually his first televised appearance, reflecting how the show is still going strong another 10 years after this film was made and has an exciting future to look forward to with Gatwa's upcoming Doctor set to mark a fresh new era for the show in 2024.
  • Despite his obvious reluctance and heartbreak at leaving the show, Hartnell is shown to be very gracious and respectful to his replacement.
    • Add to that, Troughton himself is shown to be very adorably nervous, cracking a few jokes to ease his nerves, but it's clear from his facial expressions how much he respects Hartnell and is a bit sad he's leaving, too.
Troughton: I won't lie to you, I'm scared stiff.
Hartnell: Oh, you'll be fine. In fact, you'll be wonderful. I told them, you know. There's only one man in England who can take over.
