Headscratchers / The Librarians (2014)

  • In the first three films for The Librarian, we see armed guards at the entrance to the Library. In fact, in the second film, Flynn even offers condolences to one of them over another member passing. Yet, when we get to the series, they're nowhere to be seen. Did Flynn bidding over £1,000,000 on artifacts eventually drive them out of the budget?
    • Possibly, though that raises a bigger question: Who supplies the Library's budget? Not the government, surely, as they were opposed to them in Season 3 with the DOSA arc. And not through use of the artifacts, as Flynn is chastised by Charlene for even suggesting use of the Philospher's Stone for making up for the budget deficiency. So, who funds the Library in the first place? If all of the money is outgoing and not incoming, it would be very difficult for the Library to stay afloat for even a few years, let alone centuries.
    • It's possible we just don't see them. Or with Flynn pretty much becoming much the most senior member, maybe he dismissed the guards, feeling that its secret entrance and "Cal" would be enough to protect it. Also we never really get back to the Library from that side of things.
    • In 1x01, when Eve first enters the Library, a couple of guys in suits are clearly seen standing on either side of the bookshelf entrance, with postures that pretty much scream (ex-)military. Presumably they were killed by the Serpent Brotherhood when they raided the place. Because Baird didn't know about them, she never took steps to replace them (and Flynn figured that, with the only connection to the real world being through the Annex, guarded by Jenkins and later the LI Ts as well, that it was secure enough). It's mentioned at one point that the Library started out as the Library of Alexandria, which was funded by the pharoah at the time. Given the kind of money those guys had access to, that alone would've funded them for quite a while. Afterwards, it's possible they set up some kind of bank account somewhere. A couple millennia worth of compound interest would be enough to give Jenkins and the current Librarian(s) and Guardian a living wage, travel money prior to Jenkins getting the back door working, wages for the guards, supplies for Jenkins' research, etc (particularly since for most of that time, Jenkins, Charlene, and Judson didn't need to eat or drink). However, after a couple of millennia of constant use there's only so much available, hence the occasional mentions of a relatively tight budget.
  • If Darringon doesn't die at his 40th birthday anymore and is shown to survive until 1950, then what happened to all the Librarians, who have been chosen after him? Or did he just retire from the life, allowing the Library to choose another? Did this really have no other effects on the timeline?
    • Presumably he retired, possibly not long after, so that he could actually spend time with friends. Given what happens at the end of the 4th season, it seems like it's OK to tamper with the timeline as long as there aren't any "major" changes, with the "no affecting causality" rule being more of a strict guideline than an absolute law. If he retired not long after returning to the present and lived out his life quietly, this probably wouldn't have too much of a major effect on the timeline.
  • Cassandra's ability was long explained by her "brain grape" tumor, until "And the Eternal Question" shows her gift is actually stronger without the tumor. Was she always going to develop the ability, then? And if so, how? Where did it come from?
    • It's possible that it's a magical ability which she was born with, and/or was enhanced by all the time she spent practicing magic/living among magical artifacts.
