The man eventually dies from tetanus, and the circus freaks comfort him in his last moments by singing the song's chorus in a slow, mournful tone. But immediately after that, the song returns to its normal, fast tempo, and they sing the chorus one more time in a more energetic tone. Is it meant to be part of the story? Maybe the freaks are singing the chorus in their usual cheerful tone in a desperate attempt to stay positive after watching their friend die?
Personally, it feels to me like them carrying on because they feel he wouldn't want them to let his death bring them down.
