• So how come when the Wattersons transform, the only one who DOESN'T become a human is Darwin?

  • It's because the Wattersons were meant to turn into the "ideal nuclear family", which typically consists of two married parents and their biological children. Darwin is adopted however, which doesn't fit with the stereotypical "nuclear family" look, so it defaulted back to him being the family pet at one point by making him into a dog. Obviously, this isn't true, since Darwin is just as much a legitimate Watterson as the rest of them, but in the eyes of the Mayor, who wanted them to be the perfect example for his new gated community, Darwin isn't a Watterson child, he's a pet. Darwin and Nicole even point out earlier how, according to Elmore's laws, Darwin is in a legal gray area when it comes to being a "pet" or a "family member".
    Darwin: Maybe they cleared up that legal gray area about whether I'm a feral animal or your child.
    Nicole: Oh, honey. You're the same as all my kids— a combination of both.
