He must have been promoted to Lieutenant-Commander and transferred to the USS Hood as soon as the original Nervala IV mission was over, and then promoted to full Commander and transferred to XO of the brand new USS Enterprise in under two years, which seems a ''very' short period of time - especially as Picard describes Riker as "highly experienced" in his Captain's Log in the first ever episode.
