Headscratchers / Shadow of the Conqueror

Go To

  • Two confusing aspects of Light-Bringing magic, specifically how it's lost if "one commits any immoral act, even lying.": 1)That's kind of an unrealistically black and white system. Let's say for example that Dayless The Conqueror had been an outright Hitler Expy rather than just a partial analogue, and went on a mass Ethnic Cleansing of, say, Tuerasians. If some of Daylen's soldiers knocked on their door, Would a Light-Bringing Schindler-expy loose their powers if they told the soldiers that they weren't harboring any Tuerasians? 2)Does the act in question have to be objectively immoral to take away a Light-Bringer's powers, or does it merely have to fail the test of the Light-Bringer's personal moral compass? Continuing the above analogy, would, for example, a light-Bringer be able to retain their powers if they were fully brainwashed by Hitler-Daylen's propaganda and joined his army? The fact that Ahrek tries to kill Daylen after learning of his true identity in spite of all the good he's done as well as the current situation supports the latter hypothesis.
    • Unless whatever power is behind Lightbringing let it slide on account of the target being Daylen. The Light punished him in the most painful why he could imagine, in his own words, so it might think of killing him as neutral act. Regardless, the implication of almost everything we know about Lightbringing is the former, and that an indoctrinated Lightbringer would lose their powers, and likely so would the Schindler. Note how Ahrek can lie by omission and so on, even if its functionally the same as lying outright, it didn't affect his powers. As for Black-and-White Insanity, well, being The Fettered comes with superpowers, in this instance, so perhaps there's a reason for that.
    • In addition to having an absolute spatial frame of reference (to which Darkstone is locked), it seems Everfall also has an absolute moral frame of reference (to which Light-Bringing refers). The conundrum is deepened by the appearance that the author believes this is true about real life as well, so he never bothers to clarify to the audience how the setting diverges from normal life in this respect.
