You're not coming back from that, and as the enemy leader, you'd probably be imprisoned or killed. Similarly, political supremacy means your opponent controls everything politically and can stop you from ever coming back. But if your opponent achieves scientific domination, what's stopping you from continuing to develop your city? Especially considering that you might have been on the verge of conquering your opponent's city or even getting your sixth symbol.
