So, in this universe, vampires are weak to water? How does that even make sense? Vampires need to drink blood to survive, but blood itself is made mostly of water, so shouldn’t it be like poison to vampires then? Hell, the human body itself is mostly made of water too, so if you’re a vampire, shouldn’t it hurt like hell whenever you try to sink your teeth into someone, when you try to kiss them or when you have sex with them?
What about the weather and atmosphere? Ice and snow are both made of water, so shouldn’t it hurt any vampire that tries touching them? And the Earth’s atmosphere is partially composed of water too, so logically it should be unbreathable for vampires, right? By that logic, for vampires, breathing the Earth’s atmosphere would be like what trying to step in a radioactive nuclear wasteland does to a human: it would make them really sick and slowly kill them, right?
And what about hygiene? How do vampires even wash themselves or their possessions in this universe? If they can’t use water to clean themselves or their homes or whatnot, then how do they stay clean? They can’t take baths, they can’t shower, they can’t brush their teeth, they can’t wash their clothes or dishes by themselves or whatnot, etcetera, because all of these things require water to be done. If that’s really the case, then it’s absolutely disgusting and vampires like Moka or her family must smell like absolute shit and they should not look as clean or pretty as they do in the story.
Seriously, what was the author thinking when they came up with this? Can someone please explain to me if vampires in this universe have a way to work around that really stupid weakness? Because otherwise, if given the choice, I think I’d rather be a vampire from the Twilight universe than a vampire from this universe. Yeah, that’s right, you heard me, folks. Say what you will about the Twilight vampires and make fun of their sparklyness all you want, but for all their flaws, at least they don’t have a weakness as stupid as freaking WATER.

- My mistake. By "100% pure", I was referring to the ratio of water to extras. The pool was, by volume, more water than chlorine or other chemicals, thus it registered as "pure". A river, by volume, is more water than minerals. Purity, as I was trying to define it, was more a matter of the proportion of water-to-stuff. And the weakness to water is also a reference to how mythological Dracula style vampires-like Moka-couldn't cross running water except in very specific circumstances in very specific ways. It would be like introducing an elf and giving them a weakness to iron or steel, thus needing specially-made utensils: mythologically, the Fae were harmed by contact with cold iron. Again, if you know your mythology a weakness to water isn't that far-fetched. Yokai are just as much supernatural as physical beings, after all.
- Thinking on this more, other things occurred to me.
- 1) the swim club is almost completely composed of Mermaids, and I distinctly recall seeing gills on Ichinose Tamao's monster form. If they're breathing the water (which they admittedly might not be), I think there's a very low chance of the pool actually being chlorinated; most likely it's saltwater.
- 2) The only time I remember Inner!Moka being harmed by water was immediately before Tsukune first transformed into a ghoul, after she was weakened by giving him some of her blood. When the pool thing happened, she tanked the water with little effort. The rosario explicitly seals the majority of her power away, so it may be that the relative strength of the vampire determines how vulnerable to water they actually are.
- So you’re saying their pools don’t use chlorine to clean themselves? Then how does the school faculty clean them? The students are teenagers, and teenagers sweat, lose dead skin cells and small hairs a lot, especially when doing sports like swimming. You’re telling me that the school faculty doesn’t clean or desinfect their pools despite that? Also, yes, some of the classic vampire stories do say that they’re vulnerable to crossing streams of running water, but not to touching water itself. Giving a classic monster a new weakness or dialing one of their previous weaknesses up to eleven not only makes them less scary, but also less badass. Especially when it’s a weakness that can be found practically everywhere on the planet at any time, like, you know, water. And speaking of which, you mentionned something about Moka adding oil and herbs to the water to be able to bathe in it, right? Well, by that logic, it still wouldn’t help or make sense, because a) it would still be be of a similar water/extra component ratio to pool water, and b), oil and plants are also partially composed of water too. You can’t neutralize poison by adding more poison to it, you know.
- There are other ways to disinfect a pool than chlorine. I spent quite a bit of time working at a Scout camp; we NEVER used chlorine, insurance wouldn't cover us if we did, we were required to use a type of saltwater. My younger sister was on the high-school swim team, same story, chlorine is considered too much potential liability for use in schools. She lifeguarded at several different camps as well as a local water park, third verse same as the first. The reason why chlorine is the most common method is because the other methods are prohibitedly expensive for the average consumer and people who own their own personal pool, above- or in-ground, make up the majority of the modern market. In no way shape or form am I claiming that it works that way everywhere, just what my own experiences have been.
- And at the end of the day I chalk it up to "supernatural creature, has its own set of rules to govern how it functions that do not necessarily have to align with the laws of science". If they did, werewolves like Gin wouldn't be able to shapeshift. Neither would Moka's sister Kahlua. Or any of the other yokai. If they were bound by the laws of nature as we understand them, none of their abilities would function, at least not in the way we see. But they do. Hence the term "supernatural".

However, by that logic, the whole “vampires are weak to water” doesn’t count as science either, because it’s something that’s exclusively connected to vampires in that world. But regardless, it doesn’t really matter. The story directly says that vampires are weak to water, yet it shows them being exposed several times to substances that are partially made of water (again, blood, oils, ice and the atmosphere). It’s not even a matter of science-versus-magic anymore. The story is blatantly defying it’s own established rules and internal logic for the sake of plot convenience. That’s the literal definition of a plot hole. To quote the “Laconic” of the trope page, a plot hole is when “the story contradicts itself by breaking a rule established earlier in the story”. And that’s exactly what happened. Plain and simple.

Wouldn’t Moka risk accidentally hurting herself every time she kisses Tsukune, (especially if it’s on the lips or a straight-up french kiss) due to the very high chance of coming in contact with his saliva? And for that matter, if we assume that vampire saliva has the same composition as human saliva, shouldn’t vampires get constantly hurt or weakened by their own saliva as well? As I just said, saliva is about 98% water, which, according to your logic, makes it just as dangerous to vampires as the water from the pool, so what gives? And that’s not even getting into other bodily fluids like pee, cum, mucus, digestive fluids, amniotic fluids, etc. Yeah, I know it’s gross to think about, but it does make you wonder.

- Vampires with issues to do with water isn't purely a Rosario+ thing. Legacy of Kain's vampires are weakened by rain or snow during Blood Omen, and I believe hurt crossing streams. Likewise Soul Reaver's vampires, which are "evolved" mostly wind up burned like they got dumped in an extremely strong acid. In addition, I believe there's at least one type of IRL vampire myth that has them unable to cross running water and blessed/holy water is one of the common anti-supernatural aids.
- If that’s really the case, then this massive plot hole applies to the vampires of those universes too. They’d kill themselves just by drinking blood. And again, giving a monster a weakness as stupid and as common as water makes them way less intimidating. By that logic, you’d be able to hurt and weaken a vampire just by spitting on it.
I suppose you could just Hand Wave this by saying, "Filler episode stupidity," but why is it that after Ijuuin's hypnotic spell breaks, everyone except Moka and Kokoa forget what happened? They made it very clear through multiple inner monologues that the main girls at least were lucid and aware of what they were being forced to do. So why, when they are finally freed, does it erase their memories of what happened to them?
How on earth was Tsukune to know that Moka was weak to water without her telling him? How was he being a jerk for wanting to join the swimming club? In the manga he just wanted to swim with Moka, and in the Anime SHE was the one who signed them both up at once. I just can't see why this is something Tsukune has to apologize for rather than it just being a misunderstanding.
Tsukune never asked Moka if she wanted to join the swim club; in the anime, he wanted to see Moka in a swimsuit. Had he actually talked to her, she probably would have told him that she's weak to water. I think Moka signed them up in the anime because she got jealous of Tamao flirting with Tsukune. "I see your girlfriend's not too interested. Why not join anyway? I promise I'll take real good care of you." Moka then joined because she didn't want to "lose" Tsukune to Tamao.
Somebody tell me, why the hell was Issa Shuzen made into the leader of the Three Dark Lords and the creator of Moka's rosary in the anime? I mean, I know Akasha hadn't been introduced in the manga yet, but why didn't the producers of the anime at least ask Ikeda who the third Dark Lord was?
- Honestly, the anime has so little resemblance to the original manga's plot that messing up that one more detail is trivial in perspective. They couldn't ask Ikeda for a spoiler, but the Three Dark Lords never actually came up in the anime's plot (or lack thereof) anyway, and that ending didn't really suck any more than the rest of the anime.
- Admittedly, it's very difficult for an anime to air one season, then wait 3-4 years before they have the material necessary for the second season, but this could have been averted had they split the manga's "season one" into two or three anime seasons. It actually had enough material that they might have been able to pull it off, had they been following the original plot. There was easily enough material in the Anti-Thesis arc for a second season, at least. However, to people who hadn't read the manga, it would have made for a shockingly dark and unnerving tone shift. The same could actually be said of the second season of the manga as a whole, actually. So basically, their only option aside from changing the anime on a fundamental level (and actually making it good) was to create a completely different story made entirely of filler, based extremely loosely on the first few chapters of season two and a couple of rehashed characters and stories from season one.
I've seen all of Season 1 of the anime, and I plan to get the manga, and honestly, as someone who has yet to read the manga, why is Kurumu's anime persona considered an evil bitch compared to her manga counterpart? From what I've seen, her biggest asshole moments came in episode 2 of the anime, and afterwards, she gets along rather nicely with Moka and the other girls who want Tsukune.
In fact, it's Tsukune being a mutual concern that has solidified her friendship with the other girls, Moka especially. She would often help out in battle, and for the most part kept her jealous antics in trying to screw over Moka to either giving him Marshmallow Hell or trying to get him off to herself (and to be fair, all the other girls have their moments of trying the latter themselves).
By the end of the anime, she even has no problem with Moka turning Tsukune into a ghoul/vampire if it would mean saving his life and letting him stay in the school, despite the fact this would literally tie him to Moka via a blood pact.
With all the above, she seems fairly nice for an evil, ice cold bitch who wants to utterly screw over Moka, so why is her anime counterpart considered a flanderized parody of her manga counterpart?
- The anime itself is much more Flanderized than the manga counterpart since the anime evolved into a Fanservice-ridden comedy. To address your point, Kurumu in the manga is actually The Heart of the group. She genuinely cares about the other girls in the "harem" and is no where near as close to be superficial about her appearance.
P.S.- Yes, I understand she's even nicer to Moka and the other in the manga and quite supportive of them, and yes, I've been given to understand she's less flirty in the manga, but where did the perception I keep hearing about her being a selfish haremette come from?
- Look up chapter 17 of the Season 2 of the manga to see how different she is from the anime. In fact, the Above the Influence entry in the main page (which seems to have been added only yesterday) has the whole chapter explained (and unspoilered) word-for-word. She is head-over-heels for Tsukune, but she has a strong bond with each and every one of her friends. They matter to her as much as Tsukune does, unlike in the anime, where she's way more feisty - while she still tries to win him over without having to resort to her Succubus Charm, what she mostly does is bicker with the other girls because of Tsukune. My guess for her manga behavior is this: before she met Tsukune, she always had to use her wiles to get what she wants; after that, she noticed that she didn't need to do that anymore, as he defended her on his own free will. Okay, that explains why she fell for him. What I think is that this is the same for the girls too - Kurumu probably was a Libby before her change of heart, and thus, she had no real friends. Tsukune coming into her life made her open up to the friendship of Moka, Yukari, and later Mizore.
- The confusion actually might be caused by differences between japanese and english versions of the anime. For example, in episode 4, when inner moka tells Tsukune that if he left, there'd be no more blood for her and outer moka would cry, in the japanese Kurumu says "Though I'd go "yahoo!" if Moka cried," while in the english she says "though moka not sucking your blood WOULD be a good thing..." It really seems that she's far more of a bitch in the Japanese than in english, and if you only saw the english version like I did until just recently, that would explain why it sounds like people were overreacting.

By the way, the whole thing of Gin and Haiji thrashing the Fairy Tale office was not about them having hostages (though Haiji didn't know Sun wasn't there until Gin told him). It was more to get their point across as something like: don't fuck with Youkai Academy, or Youkai Academy will fuck with you.

- But remember, Haiji belongs to the Karate Club, not to the Newspaper Club. Thus, they wouldn't have had any business with him in their assault against the Newspaper Club. Also, he and Gin don't really get on with each other (if only on the outside) - note that, on the assault to the 7th Branch of Fairy Tale, Haiji said he only agreed to join Gin because of Sun - he does like her, but both for right and wrong reasons.

Why didn’t the headmaster of the school deal with the security committee when they started to go out of control?
- I recall that the Anime (need to look at the manga version to check if its anime only) Handwaves this with a Explaination that, while they do specialize in, well, that, they only have one man out of all their boy toys they actually reproduce with. While they do get around alot, they only father children with a select man, which would make birth rates not as high as one would expect with all the "activity" they engage in.
- Honestly, I wouldn't be surprised if succubi are rather less "endangered" than Kurumu lets on.
- Most of the girls mention their species having population difficulties. Snow woman have an enforced breeding program, and vampires were mentioned to have something similar in the past. There also the Headmaster's "paradise" where endangered magic beasts are kept for their own protection. I think it's likely that something happened that nearly wiped out the monster races.

- A succubus' power is seduction. Which means that most any guy they get involved with is going to do it for reasons unrelated to love. My theory is that succubus can only get pregnant (or only wants to) from someone who loves them for real. If her power is always on at a low power, even if she finds herself attracted to a guy, it's likely that they are going to fall under their spell before any real relationship can start.

All the family we've seen of her so far was her mother, and the only thing we know of her, relationship-wise, was that she and Tsurara (Mizore's mom) used to fight for a boy who, in the end, got on with another girl and, down the road, fathered Saizou. We've seen Mizore's father in the anime, but who did Ageha get on with to give birth to Kurumu?
- It's stated in Kurumu's introduction about the fact that Succubi are said (by Moka herself) to seduce men and then HAVE SEX UNTIL THE MAN DIES. Perhaps Kurumu's father was just one of Ageha's slaves?
- O.K., everyone is ignoring the fact that Kurumu has stated that she needs to find her ONE TRUE LOVE, she can't just sleep with any man and get pregnant. Part of her reason for hating Moka at the start is because of Moka taking up a lot of attensionfrom the guys at the school; from Kurumu's point of view, Moka is possibly taking Kurumu's true love away from her, and unitensionly endagering Kurumu's species. Kurumu focuses on Tskune because she believes he's the destined father of her children. Just to sum it all up: she's not a slut who's lying about her specieces edangerment, she's just trying to win over the man she belives to be her true love.
- The job of the teachers is to teach the same kind of subjects you'd find in a human school. Apparently, monsters are expected to already be able to look like humans. It's acting like them they're learning in their classes. As for the psychopathic gorgon (who seems to do a sufficient job of hiding her non-human appearance), she was keeping the "psychopathic" part hidden until that meddling human exposed her.
- Maybe those are the monsters who are good at acting human. Pretty much every monster we have seen has done a terrible job of hiding what they are, so the teachers at the school might really have been the best they can find.
- Nekonome-sensei's poor disguise was pointed out by one of the students. Who promptly had his face torn up by her claws. And perhaps monsters like Nekonome, who are incapable of disguising themselves well enough to go unnoticed in the human world, have nowhere else to go for employment. Adult monsters who are better at passing themselves off as human are living in the human world, passing themselves off as human.

But if she can only hide her tail, she'll be doing rather fine, considering that her cat ears are enmeshed with her hair (thus, anyone who would look oddly at her would do so because of that "strange hairstyle" of hers). If she didn't have such an affinity for miniskirts, perhaps... (note, in the manga, that Ishigami-sensei wears a bandanna and uses braids in a convincingly enough way to hide her being a medusa).

In the manga, I’ve seen her referred to by both names. Also, is it a coincidence that Moka drinks Kagome tomato juice?

- I'm going to agree with the OP. I like Mizore's character and all, but she tries to rape Tsukune, despite being both a sexual asault victim and it being clearly established in the 10th volume that she would put Tsukune's feelings ahead of hers, and no one even gave a rat's ass. She didn't even see how any problem with trying to date rape Tsukune even after she nearly killed herself after being sexually assaulted the second time. Then she makes the person, who helped her cope with her second sexual assault believe; she was raped. Akihisa Ikeda is a pretty good writer, so why is this happening without even being handwaved? It would at least work if Mizore was supposed to have issues with her sexual assault is and was taking out her frustration on others, but it's just supposed to be a funny prank. WTF man?
Considering how powerful many monsters are, it makes you wonder how humanity took over the world to the point where the monsters have to live in hiding and blend in as humans. Especially since for most of that time period, humans would have been limited to melee weapons plus archery.

- Humans are also probably more quick-witted than most, if not all, monster species, judging from the fact that we're the ones who have invented everything and set their curriculum by our own academic standards and innovations- note that their curriculum is a copy of the Japanese standard, with no secret monster knowledge at all besides limited witchcraft, which is as much our knowledge as theirs. It probably helps that humans are way less ruled by instinct than monsters are- succubi and snow women are romantically driven to the point of being a liability in any hypothetical war scenario, half of 'em go into berserk rages when they try to fight, implying an abandonment of tactics and sneaky fighting, etc. Humans would- and would always have- won against monsters for the same reason that humans have always won against stronger, faster species with better built-in equipment IRL- we're smarter than them and have mastered the art of using tools to compensate for any situation.
- Now factor in the possibility of rare but formidable human champions: Kung Fu + Ki; human magic users of diverse stripes; youkai exterminators; etc. Even of only a few of those classes exist in-universe, it's bad for the youkai. And remember what happened to wolves in the real world, where they became a problem, they were hunted to extinction.

- Remember that Humans Are Bastards, Humans Are Warriors, and our tendency to combine the two when it comes time to wage war. Yes, they have a few monsters capable of using lust techniques, or moving fast... but we have Tanks, nuclear warheads, cruise missiles, infrastructure, a planetwide communications network, guns... not to mention any number of biological or chemical weapons that we could pull out. And remember, monsters are by and large, scared of us because in the past we wiped them out in great numbers. We didn't have half the advantages previously listed even as far back as fifty years ago, much less the hundreds of years implied by the series. Plus, we just hit the seven billion mark. We have a lot of advantages over the various monster races.
- On top of this, keep in mind that compared to even the most bloodthirsty of monsters, humans are STILL perceived as being more dangerous and vicious because humans will wipe THEMSELVES out almost at the drop of a hat. For all that they fight amongst each other, no monster species is as self-murderous as humans are. And let's not forget how worrisome it must be for the monster world that humans have such a talent - if not a drive - for developing new ways of killing.
My question is this: both succubi and yuki-onna are implied to be able to reproduce their own kind from other races, and since both Kurumu and Mizore fell for Tsukune before they knew what he was, with the intent of repopulating their respective races, this indicates that they'd get a pure succubus/yuki-onna no matter what kind of monster Tsukune might have been. Not to mention that Mizore's fiance was definitely not a yuki-onna (otoko?). If that's the case, then how are there hybrid monsters?
- Granted, as single-gender species (assuming incubi are treated as a different race from succubi), they might be more the exception than the rule, and vampires have been mentioned to have concerns about purity...
- One possible explanation might be genetics. So you have a Yuki-onna have children with, say, an ogre, and the child is undoubtedly a Yuki-onna, she might have a feature or two of ogreish descent- nothing major, but enough to say what the father was. These little scrap elements could wait around in the genetic code until they're passed down to a child which manifests both traits, similar to a genetic disorder. Sometimes, a few generations will go by before it pops up, but those who carry the genes will be "At Risk," for their children or grandchildren to have it.
It has been established that water is one of the biggest weaknesses that vampires have. All you need is a squirt gun and you can lay down some hurt on the bloodsuckers. And that's fine... if there were only a few of them around, or they were an artificial race or something, or they were fairly new on the scene. But they've been around for a long, long time. How could a creature that shows a near kryptonite-like weakness to water survive and be considered "An S-Class Monster" on a planet that's about seventy percent covered in the stuff? How would they live long enough to breed? Or better question, how did they evolve this trait, and how did they survive in the ages before living indoors? All you need is one good rainstorm and the vampire is in a lot of trouble. It's the same problem as in the movie Signs.

As for Signs, that was justified by the explanation that using overwhelming technological advantage against a race that has nuclear weapons is not a good idea if you want anything left worth inhabiting. By fighting hand-to-hand, they gave the humans the belief they had a fighting chance, whereas vaporizing cities with energy weapons triggers the response "launch the entire nuclear arsenal at them." Even if they win that war, they still have to deal with the fallout and potentially a nuclear winter.

Seriously, if a few sprinklers does that to Moka, then why the hell didn't a freaking swimming pool not outright kill her?
- Purity of water is closely related to how much it hurts her. Presumably, the addition of chlorine to the swimming pool water but not the sprinkler water makes that much of a difference in reducing how much it affects her. This troper thought it was because Inner-Moka is so badass, she was weakened but who cares, its still enough to curbstomp the mermaid.
- I actually found this to make sense. Remember, Tsukune is, first and foremost, human. To turn into a ghoul or even use his vampire blood requires conscious (or subconscious) thought. So when the doppelganger turned into Tsukune, he turned into his real form, a human. If he had reason to believe that Tsukune had vampire blood in him, he might have been able to access his ghoul power. Scary thought.
How did Kyokou, a human, manage to get onto the academy grounds in season 2 episode 11 of the anime? The barrier ought to have killed her (which no one even comments on). Or was this foreshadowing for the barrier's impending failure?
- The same way Tsukune got in: invitation. That, and the barrier itself doesn't outright kill humans. It's the monsters inside that do the killing.
- It's also entirely possible that the whole "barrier kills humans" claim is just a made-up thing to put the students more at ease going to the school. It's never actually SHOWN to kill an intruding human, after all. A better question would be how Kyokou found a way in at ALL, since it's suggested the only way in or out requires a lift from the bus driver.
Ruby is practically a minor character in season 2. Is there any justification for making her so unimportant? Even if she did show up to convince the girls to help save Tsukune at the end of season 1.
In volume 5, we’re introduced to a group of students called the monstrels. By volume 8 we meet the Anti Schoolers. There were so many fights in that time period that I can’t figure out if they have the same goal or not. The first seems to want to kill pure bloods like vampires. members include Saizo Komiya and Kusabi Mido.) and the second seems to want to bring chaos to the monster and human worlds. Members include Hokuto Kaneshiro.

The school was closed for repairs after it was trashed on Halloween, and it stayed closed until the start of the new school year in spring, so none of the students got to finish their first year. Why were they moved up a year?
- Classes got moved elsewhere for the duration? Seems they'd have to have some kind of a "Plan B" considering all the fighting that happens, as well as how powerful some members of the student body are.
Forgive me if this is a stupid question, but I did an Archive Binge of the entire manga in about a week, so if I missed some in-story explanation, I apologize. But why would Kahlua put up with being an assassin if she didn't want to do it? Especially when she's being ordered to kill her family members. Why didn't she just tell her employer to go to hell, or better yet, kill them? She's supposed to be the perfect assassin, so it would be within her power. Did I miss the part where they say that she was brainwashed into obedience or something?
- Apparently it was out of some sort loyalty/pity for Gyokuro. After Issa started negelecting Gyokuro in favor of Akasha, Gyokuro started losing it and Kahlua didn't wanted to abandon her mother becuase she felt that everyone else did. Still i do find her trying to kill her sisters out of her loyalty for Gyokuro too much.
I haven't read the manga so maybe it's handled better in the manga but Kokua and Moka both get buried in an avalanche and it seems that the biggest problem either of them suffer is being cold sucks. In addition ice being water Mizore and other ice maidens should be uniquely dangerous to vampires with their ability to create both snow and ice. It seems to only work when the water is in liquid form.
- The wiki explains it as a result of the rosary being blessed silver, another weakness of vampires. Blessed silver drains their yoki, and constantly wearing the thing meant that Moka was stuck at low power as her yoki would drain as fast as it could be replenished.
