Headscratchers / Roald Dahl's Matilda the Musical

Go To

  • Why do none of Crunchem Hall's teachers try to stop the children's rebellion during their revolting song?
    • Given how cruel the Trunchbull is in the way she runs the school, chances are the teachers are very much on the children's side and were simply too afraid to do anything; so were the children, of course, until Matilda's first act of defiance encouraged them to take a stand.
    • Considering it appears the entire student body was revolting, even the prefects, there was likely little they could have done anyway even if they felt inclined to. But given the teachers later seem to be joining in on the celebrations in the Trunchbull's (former) office, it does seem like none of them liked Trunchbull. The fact Trunchbull dismissed them from the room before revealing the cake punishment also suggests she took steps to prevent them from intervening in any of her cruelty, so the teachers are likely normal people who would oppose the extreme punishments which go on at Crunchen Hall.

  • Why does Trunchbull allow Hortensia to wear that red beret of hers? She strikes me as the type who would enforce strict dress codes and a beret, which is different from the weird bowler/trilby hats the rest of the students wear, would likely be against the code.

  • At the end of School Song, Trunchbull makes an announcement that the children need to be in class by five seconds. After she’s counted down, Hortensia is seen walking through the corridor (singing the last line of the song). Obviously from a viewer’s perspective it makes sense, but Hortensia knows what Trunchbull’s like, why would she blatantly ignore her?
