If Sophie was born and raised on an island in Greece, how is it that throughout the show/movie, we never hear her speaking Greek or interacting with the Greek community on the island? Rather she has two native English speaking friends, Ali and Lisa. She has a native English speaking fiance, Sky. I can get her at least knowing English, but how is it that she seemingly has no ties at all to this island where it's implied she's spent most if not all of her life?

  • In the stage show, Sky was travelling and stopped when he met Sophie on the island. As for her friends and perfect English, maybe she went to boarding school.
  • UK residents frequently travel to Greece, so it wouldn't be weird for Sophie to have British friends. As for her accent, her mom (in the movie anyway) is American and a person's manner of speaking is modeled on whomever they heard and/or spoke to the most during their formative years. For Sophie, that's her mom. There's also apparently no shortage of English-speaking tourists on the island so it's not as if she was surrounded by Greek speakers all the time.

From Donna's diary the year Sophie was conceived we have a wide range of dates between when she slept with Sam and then Bill and Harry.

"July 17th. What a night! After the show, Sam rode me over to the little island. We danced on the beach, and kissed on the beach, and dot dot dot."
“August 4th. What a night! I was still feeling depressed about Sam, when after the show Bill rented a motorboat, and I took him over to the little island. One thing led to anotherand...dot dot dot"
"August 11th. Harry turned up, out of the blue, so I said I'd show him the island."
  • So, can't we rule Sam out as her father?
    • Probably not, as Donna could have been in the very early stages of pregnancy, and may not have known when she met Bill, as most women don't realise they are pregnant until after about a month to 6 weeks after conception. Sam then becomes Sophie's stepdad when he marries Donna at the end, so he does end up becoming a father of sorts to her anyway, even if he isn’t the biological father.
  • It kinda bugs me that Sophie and Skye just decided to not get married even though they were in love and had planned a whole wedding. That's a hell of a choice, to just turn to the person you are still very much in love with and go, "Let's not get married now, at the wedding we've already planned! Let's just stay together and not do that!" Apparently it felt right to them but it still doesn't really make sense.
    • This is particularly irritating because the reason Sky wasn't interested in the wedding was not because he didn't want/wasn't ready to get married, but rather because he didn't want the big white wedding. They've already got all their guests, done all the planning, and pretty much Sky still has to go through all the downsides of the 'big, white wedding', but he just doesn't get married at the end of it.
  • Why didn’t they just dub over Pierce Brosnan’s "singing" with a professional, and have him lip sync to it instead? It must have been obvious that his vocal talents weren’t up to it during production and surely it would have been less embarrassing for all involved if they had?
