• Why was Van Hauser such a bitter dude?
  • He's played by David Harbour. That's the kind of character he usually plays (or at least, he plays the same type of character in Stranger Things, as that's the only other piece of media that I've seen him play in).

  • Van Hauser is a not just bitter he's also very impatient, mostly because he's a training officer who's partner is a fresh out of the academy rookie who's very shaky and scared, which Van Hauser finds very annoying. According to a deleted scene, Sarge tells Taylor and Z that Van Hauser accidentally knocks up a woman and because of certain parenting laws Van Hauser has to shell out half his paycheck and most of his pension to pay for the kid. But the actual reason is just being partnered up with a shaky boot.
