  • Why on Earth is Darvell a midshipman? For those unfamiliar with the Plucky Middie trope, midshipman are apprentice officers who start the job at 11 or 12. Lee Ingleby's character in Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World is a disgrace and an embarrassment because he's still a midshipman in his late twenties. Assuming that Darvell is as old as Sam Riley was when he made the movie, he's a 32-year-old midshipman. I get that it's important that Ruthven is a captain and his superior, but why make him a midshipman when he could just as easily be a lieutenant?
    • It's probably just a matter of whoever wrote this not knowing much about Royal Navy ranks or culture at time.
