Headscratchers / Black Mirror: Joan is Awful

Go To

  • How did the church scene and its aftermath play out the other universes? Salma Hayek is specifically outraged by the scene because she's a devout Catholic, which isn't true for Annie Murphy nor Cate Blanchett, and it's strongly implied this is exactly why Joan chose this method to get Hayek's attention in the first place.
    • There are two possibilities: either the simulations are disjoint, and simulated Joans can act independently, motivated by their simulated personalities, or they're not, and have to follow the "script" of the universe below them. In the first case, the quamputer is simulating a full "Joan", flavored by the one-tier-below actor she's based on, as well as itself simulating (and embellishing) her actions. So, every Joan does whatever she thinks will piss off the actor depicting her in her reality. In the second case, the quamputer is simulating only "real" people, and just follows their lives, so every Joan is pre-destined to do whatever original Joan is doing. In that case, every Joan follows the church scene, with possible embellishments. Which is not much of a problem, as mostly any normal person would be outraged to be depicted defecating in a church.
    • The Stinger shows that "Source" Joan actually did the church stunt. It's outlandish enough that any actress would find it humiliating and react regardless of religion. Murphy's objection was probably worded differently and the simulation was able to incorporate Hayek's Catholicism.
  • Why didn't Joan just simply unsubscribe Streamberry? The lawyer specifically tells Joan that *Streamberry* is who is streaming her so if she unsubscribes wouldn't the contract be null since they do not have that subscription anymore?
    • There could be a clause in the contract that says that Streamberry has the right to continue making the show based on her life in perpetuity even after her account is cancelled. Which, again, would likely not be enforceable in real life.
