  • Why did Valerie's brother lock her up, if she didn't yet know about the conspiracy? If she was home-ridden, she would learn more simply by being around them.
    • Tom's the scion of a wealthy conservative family. Valerie is his free-spirited sister. To him she's an embarrassment to the family name. Convincing her that she's chronically ill and needs to be sequestered away for her own good is a nice socially-acceptable way of making her disappear. It wasn't unheard-of among wealthy families of the time period, and it has nothing to do with the conspiracy. And if she should learn more about it, so what? She's safely sequestered away; Tom had no idea she had any friends who would come for her.
  • What was New York's original name before the Dutch sold it to the British?
