Headscratchers / Alien Nine

• Is there really no other options for humans than to "fuse or die"? How powerful the invaders actually are? The augers seem to be capable of etching concrete to a certain extent but don't seem too powerful and their range also isn't unlimited. And even if we don't have any more advanced weapons than 100-megaton nukes, humanity still should possess enough means to keep these aliens at bay. So what kind of upper hand do the invaders have?
• What does it actually mean to turn alien or remain human? Kumi is physically a Borg but still has her own personality and free will. Kasumi on the other hand has the Yellow Knife inside her mind although she still seems to retain part of her personality. However there's no telling what happened to Hisakawa. Is she still herself or did the Borg completely take over her mind? She said that fusing with a Borg is like being in a club ... but isn't a club something you can get out of (preferrably unscathed).
