• Zodiac is a terribly dark film, but there is one sequence that's laugh-out-loud funny.
  Graysmith: Doesn't it bother you that people call you Shorty?
  Shorty: Doesn't it bother you that people call you retard?
  Graysmith: Nobody calls me that.
  Shorty: Right.
  • He then walks over to Avery at his desk in the next scene.
  Graysmith: Hey, does anyone ever call me names?
  Paul Avery: You mean like retard?
  Graysmith: Yeah.
  Paul Avery: No.
• The Aqua Velva scene.
  • With the perfect pun that the song playing is "Crystal Blue Persuasion".
• During the Terrible Interviewees Montage:
  Woman: Have you considered the killer might be Paul Avery?
  Toschi: Frequently.
• Graysmith referring to his sons as "colleagues" when talking on the phone, and telling them not to tell Mom about their special project.
• While waiting for the Zodiac to call, Jim Dunbar and Melvin Beli spend time chatting about the latter's episode on Star Trek.
• The caller arranges a meeting with Belli on the air; when he gets driven there by the police, he is predictably surrounded by cars, helicopters and bystanders.
  Belli: My, my, my, you fellows certainly know how to put on a secret meeting.
• Graysmith formally introduces himself to Toschi:
  Graysmith: We met at the movies once.
  Toschi: It must've been magical.
