Funny / Whyborne and Griffin

Go To

  • Whyborne's tendency to casually reference things that he finds perfectly normal due to growing up in Widdershins (or having a slightly eccentric mother) that would otherwise raise a few eyebrows.
  • Whyborne's belated realization that Widdershins is not your average town:
    • "Always going on about how in other cities one didn’t usually hear muffled chanting after dark, or that cloaked figures would attract suspicion. He’d even complained of the carols our first Christmas together, claiming “Blood on the Altar” wasn’t a staple of the holiday season. And yes, there was a bit more grave robbing than could be accounted for, especially in a town with no medical school. Yes, it was inadvisable to go too far into the local forest, if one didn’t wish to vanish without a trace. True, it was founded by sorcerers and inhabited by ketoi hybrids, and ghul hybrids, and enough people went mad we’d needed our own insane asylum before I destroyed it, and... Oh God. It was a horrible murder town, wasn’t it?"
  • Related, Whyborne trying to interact with a pair of seven year olds.
Whyborne: “Even so, perhaps you should concern yourselves with…”
I tried to remember what I’d done for pleasure at their age.
Whyborne: “…translating the classics from Greek? Or building altars in the garden?”
Child: “Oh, that does sound like fun. Let’s build an altar beneath the roses, where Mother won’t see it.”
    • Followed by: "At least they now had an ordinary, wholesome childhood activity to occupy their minds."
  • “Yes,” Christine said, stabbing the soup with her spoon. “The tiaras are excellent.”
  • Whyborne's persistent obliviousness to Maggie's crush on him, even when being told directly to his face.
  • The entire scene in Draakenwood where Whyborne and co. walk in on Maggie and Persephone.
  • Griffin, to Whyborne: You're so beautiful.
Christine: That confirms it. His brain has been damaged.
  • Christine taking offence to the idea the yayhos might not consider women's brains worth harvesting.
Whyborne: Lovely. Perhaps you and I shall have adjoining jars.
  • At one point in Fallow, Whyborne and Christine attempt to go undercover at a hotel as newlywed couple. Their ideas for disguises include a ridiculous fake mustache and an enormous feathered hat.
    • When they think someone is about to catch them snooping in a hotel room, Christine's solution is to jump up and down loudly on the bed making sex noises, much to Whyborne's embarrassed horror.
    • When Griffin tells Whyborne his mustache is perhaps more attention getting than one would want out of a disguise, Whyborne rips it off angrily, totally forgetting it was held on by spirit gum thereby stinging his upper lip comically hard.
