    Main story
  • Luxe's mother going over his sketchbook and commenting on a picture of one of his sisters which she complained made her look like a cow. Luxe's reply was that it was the fault of the model, not the artist.
  • Some of Luxe and Platinum's bickering about their mentorship of Gleam.
  • The way Gleam describes Wheaton as doing something with a girl that "Gleam's mother would have smacked him just for naming."
  • When Katniss and the others read Camden's diary and find out that his mentor was a drunk, Johanna snarks that it must be a District 12 tradition.
  • Mags' gloating over her victory and Do Not Call Me "Paul" moment during the announcement of her victory, plus the reaction of the other victors, is pretty funny.
Mags: Hey, Old Boys Club! How do you feel about that? You feeling good now? Suck it, you underbred sons of bitches!
Augustine Pine: Ladies and gentlemen, I am pleased to announce the Victor of the Eleventh Annual Hunger Games! Magnificent Baxter-Dupont!
Mags: I told you my name is Mags! Eat spear, you Capitol bastard! Say it with me! My. Name. Is. Mags!
    Ahenobarbus: Oh, I like her.
  • Bovina's mentor introducing her to two peacekeepers with the statement that their not bad "for District 2 Bastardos" and said peacekeepers finding this Actually Pretty Funny.
  • The Tranquil Fury of Ahenobarbus and Tiberius is practically leaping of the page as the narration notes that a boy Boudicca hospitalized (although he deserved it) was the intended tribute that year and that due to the substitution they lost again, to District 8.
  • Johanna being forced to go on vacation in 4 because of the chaos she's been causing in 7.
  • Caesar advising an intern Pine fires to just change his face before showing up again.
  • Augustine Pine, host of the Hunger Games, fainting at the sight of blood after Virtus's fight with the Sixatrons.
  • Virtus, in his capacity as a mentor, sending a tribute an oxygen tank in the middle of a forest fire. The ensuring death by explosion surprised no one.
  • During Elena's Games, desperate for supplies, the girl from 2 made "an impassioned appeal to duty and honor and courage in an attempt to rouse support for herself and her allies. She received a cracker."
  • Briseis threatening to rip out an obnoxious reporter's hair extensions for bringing up the tour (and how unfazed the reporter sounds) followed by her un-flowery show of gratitude to her sponsors when prompted.
Briseis: Thanks for helping me keep my skin.
  • In a bit of Mood Whiplash, the False Reassurance of another reporter to Briseis' aunt that the article will in no way make her sound like an abusive guardian.
  • The whole description of Briseis' arena as a tourist brochure (with places where people died horribly as the highlights), in a Crosses the Line Twice (or even three times) kind of way.
  • Beetee looking at his messy lab, comparing it to a birds nest and being thankful his fellow Victors call him Volts instead of Jabberjay.
  • Beetee's reaction to Bovina taking up bungee jumping.
  • Beetee trying grilled rattlesnake dipped with hot sauce in District 10 is immediately followed by him diving for the water pitcher and downing it in three gulps.
  • Cora's reaction to Mags asking her to play Heroic Seductress.
  • Barty's stepfather Comically Missing the Point and asking Boudicca for her autograph after she gives him a "The Reason You Suck" Speech.
  • Barty spitting in his abusive stepfather's face from ten feet away when Phyle has the audacity to insinuate that his abuse helped make Barty into a tribute.
  • The reveal of Jade's full name (Jade Opulence Boelyn) and her From the Mouths of Babes interaction with Wonder.
  • Everything from Dido's chapter, which is presented as her mentor ranting about all the things a tribute shouldn't do which Dido did anyway, including and not limited to throwing poop-filled snowballs at peacekeepers to pulling a Laxative Prank on Tiberius (which Antigone says no one found funny before admitting that Boudicca did) to painting a penis on the forehead of the camouflage instructor, to pretending to be a duck during her interview.
Antigone: Yes, your wrestling skills are very impressive. Yes, it's very likely that you may end up naked in the arena, and it's true that your clothes are just something that can get caught or snagged or used against you. Yes, stripping down to take on the trainers is an excellent way for the Gamemakers to assess all of your assets as well as your dominant personality. But for the love of Panem, couldn't you have put your clothes back on before you came back to the apartment? It is unwise to announce to the Gamemakers during your solo exhibition that you're here to conquer the world. The Gamemakers are very fond of the world, and your probably setting them up to be underwhelmed. I agree that you deserved more than a '9' but that's what happens when you don't follow the damn script now get to bed before I do something I probably won't regret.
  • The reveal to Boudicca's Tranquil Fury reaction of a male District 2 child being named after her. She promptly destroys the birth certificate and forces the boy's parents to rename him, provoking in-universe speculation about whether she felt her name was being made a mockery of, or it was a Pet the Dog moment because she felt that a boy with her name would be teased and such.
  • Dido spray painting her mansion Cheery Pink.
  • Granyte commenting that Dido and Virtus have probably run through Ares' wine cellar and are recreating the opera of Boudicca the Bold.
  • Some of the descriptions of how crummy Justinian Trinket's life is at different points.
  • Arguably Matty's Establishing Character Moment for his Dude, Where's My Respect? arc. His chapter begins by noting he bore an unfortunate resemblance to a rat, his rat, then it gets mentioned that his victory was one that made the serious fans and bet-takers say "I don't know how the fuck that happened, so let's move on."
  • Luxe's speech about the Rebellion and pledging support to Mags is slightly undercut by all the butterflies the landed on him in the meantime.
  • Brutus feeling that Beetee is his favorite Victor until the next year when Cerulea kisses him.
  • Brutus's fondness for trashy novels modeling peacekeepers after western sheriffs, and his fondness for orchids and marveling about how some people don't know how to take care of them properly.
  • Jade's Arson, Murder, and Jaywalking snark asking if Coin is accusing her of public littering.
  • During the 2nd Quarter Quell, the District 8 stylist Stealing the Credit for the dress alterations her tribute did.
  • Antigone and Tigellinus smirking when Boudicca thinks Lyme is a boy and Boudicca mentally vowing not to give them any Wintermas presents.
  • Applicable in-universe as well — Blight sheltering in what he believed to be the temple of a goddess who he thought watched over him... in other words, a Starbucks in ex-Chicago.
Beetee: [Blight's] arena was set in the ruin ancient American city called Chicago. There he sheltered in the temple of a goddess and believed she had watched over him. I never had the heart to tell him that Starbucks was a coffee franchise nearly eight-hundred years ago.
  • A District 4 boy in Wiress's Games accidentally blowing himself up with a grenade he was going to throw at mutts and inspiring an Unusual Euphemism for Premature Ejaculation.
  • Hal's ally Rarity observing how bedraggled the alliance looks and reflecting on how their wild hair must be disappointing her shampoo company sponsors.
  • Priam's last thought after losing his final battle with Hal being annoyance that they don't even wait until he's dead to play the trumpets signaling Hal's victory.
  • The Head Gamemaker responsible for the Antarctic arena fiasco being demoted to cleaning up after the parade horses.
  • Brutus constantly doing the wrong thing on the first half of his date with Cecelia, like taking her to a restaurant built over her mentor Cora's arena.
  • Cecelia revealing a Laxative Prank she pulled on one of the Sex Slave clients.
  • After Roan wins the 58th Hunger Games, Bovina asks Manannan for advice about dealing with an unstable victor. He tells her to "invest in locks".
  • Roan wondering why Katniss can't feel the hatred of his glare at her and deciding it's probably because he's dressed like a flaming cow.
  • For some, Plutarch "losing" a note Snow gave ordering him to give Roan Tully an advantage in the arena.
  • Carpathia correcting a Know-Nothing Know-It-All in the Capitol who uses the term "gypsy" and not "Roma".
  • Matty's confused reaction to finding out he missed the first District 5 victory since his own due to being on a bender.
  • Gleam faking senility and acting like he thinks the investigator questioning him about a fellow Victor's suicide is a tribute he needs to instruct on making a shelter.
  • The matter of fact way one section of Gloss's chapter, covering the 3rd Quarter Quell is titled "Tribute (Again)".
  • Gloss and Cashmere's nicknames of Sparkle and Wool.
  • While also pretty cool, Cashmere's description of how Beetee's analysis on Ancient Rome is "[c]ompletely wrong, but fascinating all the same".
  • As he takes in Cashmere's Hidden Depths, Beetee observes that their previous conversations tended to focus on the color of his tie.
  • When Cashmere reveals that she knows for the plan to break Katniss and Peeta out of the arena as they sit at a restaurant, Beetee's reaction has an amusing bit of Mood Whiplash.
The sky falls. The roof collapses. The sun goes out. I raise my hand. "Check please, Mercutio."
  • When Beetee asks how Cashmere found out about the arena plot, she gives a Badass Boast about her network of contacts, then admits that it was just because she had a one-night stand with Connor and he took a phone call to discuss the plot without checking to see if Cashmere had left his apartment yet the next morning.
  • Right before Finnick begins airing Capitol secrets, it's noted that the Capitol has been subjected to rationing, the arrest of anyone who talks out of line and other such indignities and:
The more aware of the Capitol citizens muse that this must be what life has been like in the districts for seven odd decades. The rest simply cannot comprehend that these horrible things are happening to them.
  • There is some good Black Comedy in the revenge of Finnick Odair, like when he comments how one of his "customers" enjoys being paddled "on his copious bottom" while indulging in activities "usually consigned to the privacy of a bathroom" followed by that guy hearing the laughter of his neighbors, going to his window and taking "a twelve-story swan dive".
  • Finnick's description of Caesar Flickerman publishing caricatures of President Snow and other Capitol elite in an underground newsletter, using the pseudonym "Patsy".
  • The Victors' Talent Show begins with Finnick drawing names out of a Reaping Ball while dressed like Caesar Flickerman, which is seen as a Crosses the Line Twice moment in-universe, while Bovina half-jokingly calls for him to do a striptease.
    • Johanna does bird calls/sex noise impressions of the other Victors while employing copious amounts of Binomium ridiculus, namely the Brutus Overextenious, the Connorus Wankerus, the Abernathy Drunkus and the Mags StillRidingHardus. This is punctuated with Ares going all Overprotective Dad and covering his new Victor's ears while Bovina just yells out for Johanna to be louder so she can hear in the back.
    • Beetee blasting Gloss and Cashmere with a homemade water balloon launcher.
    • Crystal talking about how a dalliance with Connor will give you an STD (especially if she's speaking from experience).
    • Berenice looking like a kid told she can stay up past bed time when offered a sip from Halibut's flask, only to gag on its contents.
    • When Berenice comments that Ares smells like a bar, he simply say not to judge him until she meets Haymitch Abernathy in a few minutes.
  • The thirteenth time Peeta ruined a cake: dropping Katniss's birthday cake when she tells him she's pregnant (for real this time).

    The Lumberjack and the Tree-Elf
  • Madame Lucia's Incoming Ham introduction and Blight's initially deep chagrin to find out that her parade costume idea is a literal tree-elf (with tree-elf being a gay slur back in District Seven, unbeknownst to Lucia).
  • There's some decent Ask a Stupid Question... Black Comedy between Blight's brothers (who helped Eamon force Blight to volunteer for the Games) when it starts looking like Blight will do well and earn sponsors.
Abel: Who's in charge of the sponsorship deals?
    Jonel: The mentors.
Abel: And who is Blight's mentor?
    Jonel: Uh... Eamon.
Abel: And whose idea was it to force Blight into the Games, take bets on who's going to gut him, and make sure he doesn't get any help from the outside?
Jonel: Yours and... oh yeah, Eamon's.
    Abel: Idiot.
  • The citizens of District 7 refuse to honor the Hunger Games by taking a day off for the interviews.
Jason: What are they going to tell the Capitol? "District 7 is sowing seeds of rebellion by working extra shifts on their days off?" It sounds ridiculous in my head and probably even more so in theirs.
  • During the interviews, Blight asks what the Capitol does with all of the trees District 7 cuts down. After being told that the wood is used to make furniture, Blight jokingly claims that he always thought they ate it.
  • Plautia doing a mocking caveman impression of the boy from District 1, Link, after he pisses her off.
Plautia: Me Link. Me like to stomp around like child. You listen to me. Me in charge! Me want to get it on with Alabaster. Link is big tough man.
  • When Blight comes out as gay, a female commentator mourns how he's unavailable and her husband says "not to me". Jason mutters for the man's wife to hit him and is gratified when she does.
  • Jason commenting that Link (the District 1 boy) was the most self-absorbed and cocky person he's ever met, and then adding that's really saying something because he went to school in the same class as some of Blight's bullies.
  • Blight noting how odd it is that Eamon's sending him a rat as food while being attentive to his other needs, realizing that Eamon has been forced to relinquish some of his official duties and calling out to the sky whether or not Jules can do better "than my useless man-whore of a mentor".
  • Johanna's angry reaction to hearing her job for the Quarter Quell conspiracy is to protect District 3.
  • Blight writing the poem Finnick reads during the Quell interviews, and Finnick not bothering to see what it says until he reads it on-stage. Johanna has a hard time not cracking up and Finnick glares at Blight in embarrassment as he leaves the stage.
  • Blight mistaking a crumbling Starbucks for an ancient temple and the logo for a goddess to be worshipped.

    Fall Into the River
  • Loomer believing that his rescue of Cecelia is a level from a video game he played.
  • Cora's Sugary Malice arguments with the District 8 escort.
  • A commentator joking that the Gamemaker who prematurely fired a cannon signifying the boy from 1's death when he survived probably got a tongue lashing, at which point Cora wonders if said tongue-lashing took the form of severing the man's tongue, given the magnitude of that blunder.
  • Blight snarking that he has "far too much wit and personality for others to appreciate" to himself.
  • Bovina complaining about how the pet charity used as a cover for the Rebel meeting didn't use the name she picked, "Touched by an Animal". In response, she's told that that name sounded like it encouraged romantic attraction to animals.
  • Ferrus's reaction to realizing how big of a mistake he made Tempting Fate.
  • While there's plenty of ugliness and old resentments in Jason and Haymitch's argument (Maysilee Donner killed Jason's cousin in the arena and Jason mocks her death), it's undermined that the "weapon" Haymitch brandishes at him ends up being a pear.
  • Arguably, Spindella's wry comment to another District 8 rebel that she's not going to trust such a vital message just to someone who owes him a favor.

    The Bonds of Blood
  • Maura and Enobaria's bored irreverence at Ahenobarbus's funeral and mental notes that they're risking a lot of laps and push-ups if they get caught.
  • Maura's mention of how the District Two tributes a few years before the 62nd Games were literally dressed as rocks, complete with grey powders and fatsuits.
  • Enobaria and her friends bickering as they try to find a lost goat during their disciplinary duties.
  • Enobaria's bemused reaction to seeing the stripperific theme of the Tribute Parade.
  • Rob challenging Caesar to an arm wrestling contest.
  • Caesar's nervous reaction to the District 7 boy citing Haymitch as the Victor he's most like.
  • For those who didn't like Tiberius, Dido's casual statement that he ate himself to death while Enobaria was in the arena.
  • The simple way Enobaria's speech slurs when she first meets Boudicca out of the arena (due to her missing teeth) undermines the solemn intensity of the scene a bit.
    Enobaria: Yes, headmithreth.
  • Boudicca's reaction when Mathos telling Boudicca that when he saw re-runs of her Games that gave him nightmares.
    Boudicca: Thank you.
  • Mathos actually seeming pleased at the novelty of being threatened by a Victor.

    Quell
  • In a dark way, the feelings about a District 1 girl campaigning for the Quarter Quell.
  • The District 4 male's indignation at being reaped (although it's kind of a justified feeling).

    Secrets
  • Dido sponsoring District 3 tributes for the heck of it.
  • Wiress getting sponsorships by out-drinking whiskey connoisseurs and telling Beetee its from science clubs to avoid getting lectured for it.
  • The mental picture of the feared and hated Luster Lancaster being afraid of the dark.
  • Connor's Love Letter Lunacy.
  • Wren triggering her allergies to get out of Capitol functions.
