Funny / The Culture

  • The names of Culture ships (or Minds) are utterly hilarious. Especially since each Mind names itself. For example:
    • Irregular Apocalypse
    • No More Mister Nice Guy
    • Of Course I Still Love You
    • So Much For Subtlety
    • Congenital Optimist
    • It's Character Forming
    • Frank Exchange of Views
    • I Blame My Mother
    • I Blame Your Mother
    • I Thought He Was With You
    • Funny, It Worked Last Timeā€¦
    • Boo!
    • Dramatic Exit
    • Thank You and Goodnight
    • Hand Me the Gun and Ask Me Again
    • Ravished By the Sheer Implausibility of That Last Statement
    • Zero Credibility
    • Ultimate Ship the Second
    • You May Not Be the Coolest Person Here
    • It's My Party And I'll Sing If I Want To
    • Falling Outside The Normal Moral Constraints
    • I Said, I've Got A Big Stick (the name is meant to be whispered every time it's said)
    • Gunboat Diplomat
    • Refreshingly Unconcerned With The Vulgar Exigencies Of Veracity
    • Mistake Not..., short for Mistake Not My Current State Of Joshing Gentle Peevishness For The Awesome And Terrible Majesty Of The Towering Seas Of Ire That Are Themselves The Mere Milquetoast Shallows Fringing My Vast Oceans Of Wrath. In other words, Don't Fuck with the Culture.
    • The more destructive the class of ship, the more likely the name is going to be hypocritically hilarious.
    • Becomes insanely funny when you hear about a race (and a real-world book critic) that insulted the Culture's ship names for a 'lack of gravitas'. Of course, being The Culture, this resulted in ships like:
      • Zero Gravitas
      • Very Little Gravitas Indeed
      • Stood Far Back When The Gravitas Was Handed Out
      • Low Gravitas Warning Signal
      • Absolutely No You-Know-What
      • Gravitas, What Gravitas?
      • Gravitas... Gravitas... No, Don't Help Me, I'll Get It In A Moment...
      • Gravitas Free Zone
  • In The Player Of Games, The Empire of Azad was confused that the Culture didn't have any anthem to play to welcome the first ambassador, so the ambassador just whistled the first song that sprung to mind... a Bawdy Song called "Lick Me Out". The Azad... haven't been told about the lyrics yet.
  • Pretty much everything the Falling Outside the Normal Moral Constraints says is funny, mostly due to Comedic Sociopathy.
