Once he swims to shore from the prison island, Dantes has a heartwarming moment celebrating his freedom... before he realizes he's standing on the shore of a pirate island. Who have been casually watching him the entire scene.
Luigi Vampa decides that Edmond's presence is an excellent way out of a dilemma: he shows mercy to Jacopo, he looks weak. But killing Jacopo would anger the smuggler's friends. When he presents Edmond with an ultimatum of "fight to the death and join my crew if you win," Edmond asks what happens if he wins but doesn't want to be a smuggler. Without missing a beat, Vampa just states they'll kill him and leave shorthanded. Edmond cheerfully responds "A life of a smuggler is the life for me and I'd be honored to kill your friend, the maggot."
Jacopo is a walking bundle of hilarity. Upon Edmond sparing his life, he vows on "all my dead relatives. Even the ones who just aren't feeling too good, that I am your man." And when they find the treasure of Monte Cristo, Jacopo has a much more simplistic approach to revenge: Go in, shoot people, go spend the treasure.
Luigi Vampa giving Dantes his nickname "Zatara". Dantes thinks its a cool name, until Vampa points out it means "driftwood". Also a Fridge-Funny: "Zatara" is the Spanish word for "Raft".
Once they find the treasure on the island of Monte Cristo, Jacopo happily declares that Dantes is now "the richest man [he's] ever heard of."
During Dantes' speech at Albert's birthday party, he makes it a point to recollect that while the boy was kidnapped in Rome, Dantes overheard the thieves threaten to cut off the boy's fingers and send them to his family as proof he was being held hostage. At hearing this, Mercedes is clearly not pleased, considering letting Albert go to Rome unsupervised wasn't her idea; that falls to Fernand.
This also falls under Black Comedy when one realizes hearing your only child was nearly kidnapped and mutilated isn't something you want to hear.
