Funny / Our Life: Beginnings & Always

Go To

General

  • A lot of the teasing that the MC and Cove can be subjected to, especially by their families, can be downright hilarious, particularly from their sister and Lee.
  • An MC with their Comfort Level set to Direct, partially due to their outgoing nature, is very prone to making jokes and quips, often making scenes much funnier than they are if the MC is set to Relaxed or Nervous.
    • Notably in Happiness (Step 3), if the MC is dating Cove and visits the aquarium with him, Cove will start to flush at one point, trying to psyche himself up into flirting with them. While a relaxed or nervous MC is more considerate about waiting for him to speak up, a direct MC is more that happy to watch him fluster.
    • If the MC chooses to look for a stranger to dance with at the Soiree in Step 2, they'll run into a boy around their age (later revealed to be Baxter), which can result in a gem of a line from a Direct MC.
Boy: "Are you planning on dancing?"
MC: "Actually, I was planning a bank robbery. Looks like I got the address mixed up. Dancing might be an okay second choice."

Step 2

  • In Roadtrip, Elizabeth will poke fun at the families taking a joint trip together, and then teases Cove and MC about one day being related legally. While this understandably flusters Cove if he's crushing on you, his response on Fond has him take it in stride.
Cove: "Hm, maybe. I guess you and me could get married, Elizabeth."
    Elizabeth: "What!? Me?"
    • This response from a Fond MC, if they offer to marry Cove.
MC: "We must unite our family ties to increase our pull in the community."
Cove: "A political marriage? Mm. It might be alright with you."
  • While hanging out with Cove, Derek, and Lee at the mall, the gang decides they want to get on the kiddie rides but discover they only have enough quarters for one ride. One of the possible solutions? All four of them squeezing onto a single ride.
    Derek: "We're gonna break it."
  • In Roadtrip, if the MC and Cove aren't set to Indifferent, the MC will get a chance to talk to Cove in the RV. Eventually, the conversation will lead to the MC asking Cove what kind of clothes he likes to see on other people, to which Cove responds with a panicked "Nothing!". The MC can potentially laugh at that.
  • During the DLC moment, Soiree, the MC has the chance to invite Cove to the moment's titular soiree. Notably, they can do this no matter their interest in Cove which means that an indifferent MC can also invite Cove to the soiree. Doing so prompts this interaction.
    Cove: "A party?"
    MC: "A soiree. Yeah."
    Cove: "With you? Why?"
Narration: You were beginning to ask yourself the same question.

Step 3

  • During the DLC Moment Boating, the MC has the chance to mix juices while out at sea. Choosing to do so will give you the option to mix as many juices as you want to varying results. The funniest of these results, adequately named "boat juice", comes if you mix all the juices together. Needless to say, the rest of the passengers are not pleased.
    • You can also have Cove help you make juice which will result in him standing helplessly and in horror as you pour each individual juice into the pitcher. Once served, Cove will apologise for doing nothing to stop it. Liz is not placated
    • You can also invite Baxter to the trip. If invited, he'll actually enjoy the juice and request for more, much to the bewilderment of everyone else on the boat
  • If the MC punched or poured their drink on Jeremy during Birthday in Step 2, then once he recognizes them in Serendipity in Step 3 he immediately hangs up.
  • Late Shift has you and Cove visit a fast food restaurant after your part-time jobs. If you threw a straw wrapper at him before at the start of Step 2 and attempt it again here, the narration notes that this has become such a regular habit for you that Cove is now used to it.
  • If the MC works at the tropical place and invites Baxter to stop by during Late Shift, then he'll get lost trying to find the restaurant because 'the tropical place' isn't its actual name.
    • The MC can then suggest that not giving the actual name of the restaurant was actually a test.
  • One of the graduation gifts an MC can give to Cove at the start of Step 3 is a handmade anklet for the MC to model. You can give him this gift even if your relationship is set to Fond. The response from Cove is a full-on laughing fit.
  • If one makes a very specific series of choices (mostly involving being vulgar and horny) throughout Step 3, then sneak into Cove's room/ask Cove to sneak into their room, he'll ask why they did that. If they're dating, the MC can respond by kissing him, which will trigger a unique line.
Cove: "Was that... was that the whole reason?"
    Cove: "Because you were horny?"
  • If not told about the $20 until Step 3, instead of an emotionally charged scene between Cove and Cliff, the result is a far more comedic scene where Cove mocks the entire ordeal, even jokingly suggesting the MC got underpaid and calling Cliff a cheapskate. After a Bait-and-Switch, of course.
    • This then leads into Cove immediately revealing that he was told about the bribe to Cliff, who jokingly complains about being betrayed by his partner in crime after so long.

Step 4

  • If the MC and Cove are in love but not dating, Cove can confess to his romantic feelings towards the MC the night after their moms' anniversary. Fairly sweet and a little amusing as he (and potentially the MC as well) have this conversation mostly naked aside from underwear. However, the true kicker comes later when Cove and the MC are about to announce their relationship to your family as you suddenly get to decide whether or not to propose to Cove right at that very moment. This is only the morning after he asked you out, mind you. Your family reacts to the announcement of your engagement about how you'd expect.
    Liz: "ENGAGED?!"
Liz: "When did you even start dating?! I thought that was gonna be your big announcement."
    • Even funnier still is that, in the Wedding DLC, Baxter will ask how you and Cove ended up together/engaged. Telling him this story is one of the few things that will throw him off his cool.
      Baxter: "How ro-"
Baxter: "Wait, on the same trip?!"

Wedding DLC

Derek's Story

  • In Responsible, Nicolas declares that he wants to see the MC's swimsuit. Jorge's response is that he only wants to see the MC in a swimsuit because obviously Derek wanted to see the MC in a swimsuit.
  • Gregorio and Irene cheating at a racing game in Responsible. Irene wasn't even playing. She just decided to even the score.
  • In Derek's version of Step 4, the Holdens and Suarezs celebrate Father's Day together. While Jorge and Derek (and potentially the MC) give presents to both Cliff and Gregorio, Nico has this to offer:
Nico: "My gift is my wonderful presence."

Baxter's Story

  • While hiking in Mountain, Baxter will begin regaling the MC with interesting trivia facts that he completely made up.
    • A callback to this occurs in Step 4, when he lies and says he used to take ballet.
  • Due to a packing mix-up, Baxter is forced to wear a khaki shirt in Mountain, much to his own horror.
  • In Sightseeing, the MC can admit to their first crush being Cliff or Kyra. They can then say that they’ve told Cove this fact, which he was predictably displeased to learn.
MC: "I think he tried to forget I told him."
  • In Drinks, the bartender will call Baxter a 'piano-headed chump' upon seeing him giving flowers to the diva. To a lesser extent, he’ll also call the MC some variant of ‘___-headed chump’, based on their front hair color, if they give the diva the flowers instead.
    • If the MC is the one giving the flowers, they can choose to say that it’s from them instead of the bartender, which is what they were supposed to say.
    • It's possible to trigger a callback to the piano-headed chump line in Step 4, whereupon Baxter will criticize the choice of insult.
  • During the brief trip to the Lodge, the MC's family demands a daily phone call with Liz or else she'll report to the police, the hotel, and anyone within earshot that Pepe le Pew is on the loose. Baxter, ever impervious to embarrassment, finds the comparison highly amusing.
    • Liz later calls him a "Victorian-era emo man", not realizing that she's on speaker and Baxter can hear her. The MC can either die of embarrassment, die of laughter, or muse that Baxter can't be emo because he lacks the signature emo bangs.
    MC: "Liz, it's on speaker!"
    Liz:"Oh."
    Beat
    Liz:"I stand by it."
  • Baxter calling out Terry’s crush on Miranda.
Baxter: "I… was the romantic tension you felt towards Miranda meant to be a secret? It felt fairly obvious from the few occasions we interacted."
  • If the MC chooses to discuss everything with Baxter in the privacy of his apartment, they can eventually confess their love to him. Baxter is so stunned he nearly falls over and has to retreat to a chair with a proper back to catch him.
  • When asked what kind of cake they want to eat at the wedding, there’s an option to pick both the wedding cake and the groom’s cake. However, it’s the option itself that sells it.
    Narration: Both. Obviously?
  • During the wedding clean-up, Miranda and Terry will suggest that the MC take a break with Terry specifically telling them to leave some of the job for Cove to do so he can earn his fifth slice of cake. Cove tries to defend himself thusly.
Cove: "It wasn't like I didn't want to help out, Terry. And besides, it wouldn't be my fifth. It would be... let's see..."
Narration: He trailed off, his gaze drifting up and to one side as he silently counted on his fingers. As a unit, Terry and Miranda rolled their eyes. Seeming to realize his mistake, Cove dropped his hands.
