Amusing moments from the Mystery Skulls Animated series of music videos following a paranormal investigation group and their "dog" and the supplemental material for the characters on Mystery Ben's tumblr.

As a Moments subpage, all spoilers are unmarked as per policy. You Have Been Warned.

Ghost

  • Vivi's reaction to discovering the mansion they just entered is haunted is pure joy accompanied with stars in her eyes while Mystery and Arthur look appropriately horrified.
  • We get plenty of references to the Scooby-Doo franchise, including a Scooby-Dooby Doors sequence. We also get a sequence where Vivi and Mystery each have (in the middle of a creepy mansion they were just running through) Dagwood Sandwiches. Mystery's sandwich is so tall it's practically out of the frame!
  • When Vivi and Mystery start running from the approaching Lewis, the ghost just runs straight through the sandwiches. There's something hilarious about an angry, dangerous ghost with cheese in his hair and two sausages hanging out of his eye sockets.

Freaking Out

  • Shiromori's expression when the ghost is about to punch her in the face is priceless. She even has an Eye Twitch! The screenshot doesn't really convey the way the Eye Twitch is perfectly timed to coincide with all the instrumentation except the kick drum dropping off for four beats. The twitch even matches up with the vocalist's "Uh!" before the instruments come back in and Shiromori gets decked!
    • Made even better if you wonder either her look was due to fear, surprise, or confusion (or some combination there of). It's hilarious to think of her saying, "uuuhhhhhh, what?" before getting her head punched off.
  • The ghost's confused expression when Shiromori regrows her missing head and hand.
  • The background on Arthur's laptop depicts the gang with Lewis' family at Pepper Paradiso. Arthur is pulling a milkshake away from his mouth with tears in his eyes and steam coming from his mouth as Lewis, Paprika and Mr. Pepper react in shock. Across the table, Vivi is lifting up the tablecloth, revealing Cayenne grinning and holding a bottle of sriracha sauce underneath.
  • When Arthur hallucinates Mystery going into his kitsune form, he freaks out and falls out of the back of the van. When Vivi wakes up, Mystery is just staring in puzzlement at Arthur and can only give a sheepish shrug.
  • Very small, but when Vivi wakes up from her nap, you can see that she's groggy not only because of her face, but also because she only bounces on the back beat while everyone else bounces for two.
  • Near the end of "Freaking Out", right before the ghost leaves and encounters the truck, there's a table with a slightly steaming mug that vanishes. So either he or one of the Deadbeats apparently took a coffee break before they resumed their search.
  • The ghost has apparently been out of it for so long that he's forgotten a few of the basics of human life. While crossing the street, he actually stops and squints at something bright... namely, the oncoming headlights of an 18-wheeler. He promptly gets creamed by it once he realizes what's barreling down at him, complete with a classic Take reaction—it's one of the very few times in the series that the iconic head-bob actually stops cold.
  • In a blink-and-you'll-miss-it moment, if you look very carefully at the trucker in "Freaking Out", just as his truck is being possessed and transformed, you'll find that he's keeping a very small chicken under his hat. As in, an actual, live bird. Under his trucker cap. And it's doing the same terrified Eye Pop as its owner.
  • At the end of "Freaking Out", the ghost turns a large truck into a ghostly monstrosity. For whatever reason, it has a pair of pepper ornaments hanging from the mirror. Slightly less funny when you realize they signify his parents. Unless you think it's just his love for ghost peppers. Or that members of his family are just shockingly uncreative (seriously, everyone but Lewis is named after a type of pepper).

Hellbent

  • When Arthur puts on the gas to get away from Lewis, Vivi starts to wake up, only to get knocked out by a bat falling on her head.
  • Shiromori getting run over by the ghost truck. Her expression is a visible This Is Gonna Suck, made even better by Lewis's puzzled expression afterwards. Despite being in a murderous rage, he breaks the mood long enough to look at his ghosts as if to ask them if they hit something. The eager, bloodthirsty Deadbeat is startled into silence, while the sadder, regretful Deadbeat looks out the window at the hapless Shiromori like a curious child.
  • Before the van crashes, there's a cut to Lance inside Kingsmen Mechanics, asleep with a book over his face. When the van crashes, he falls off his chair, and there's a Beat before he pops back up with an angry look on his face, book now sitting on his hair.
  • When Shiromori sees Vivi with Mystery, all she can do is look down at the dog with a look that just screams "Seriously?". To which he responds with a nervous smile and a shrug.
  • Vivi's expression after hitting Shiromori is nothing short of priceless, looking at her starstruck with stars in her eyes despite just whacking her over the head with a bat.
  • When Arthur comes too and screams in terror at seeing Lewis, Lewis gives him a look that screams "For god's sake man, have some dignity!" before chucking him into his truck.

The Future

  • Lewis floating towards Lance, the latter constantly shooting at him to no effect, until he lands another shot in the heart, at which point Lewis's expression basically screams, "Will you knock it off?!"
  • Though the context of the scene isn't all that funny, you can get a laugh at the expression Shiromori makes when she discovers Mystery intentionally drew his own blood. She gets sparkles around her face, her irises grow big, and she even drools quite a bit. Hell, she completely ignores Vivi, the girl she was literally trying to murder a second ago, just so she can get that sweet, sweet blood!
  • When Lewis senses Arthur touching his locket, he stops pummeling Lance - who now has multiple scuffs on him and spirals in his eyes - drops him, then scurries over to snatch his locket back.
  • When Lewis snatches back his locket from Arthur, he fusses over it in a very dorky fashion. If you look closely, he's blushing a little and sweatdrops are flying all of the place while he checks for possible damage.
  • Mystery flings Shiromori into the air, causing her to crash through the top of the truck's trailer. This somehow makes the truck explode. Shiromori's expression as she's falling into the truck is a simple annoyed look with her arms crossed.
    • Even better, Lewis and Arthur (plus an unconscious Lance and woozy Deadbeat) were still in the vicinity and later stumble out of the wreckage looking hilariously dazed.
  • Lewis and Arthur give an identical, freaked out Eye Pop when Shiromori's vines cover the wreckage of the truck. Lewis, who only has eye sockets.
  • The after credits scene with the group's (voiced) reactions to the possessed Mystery.
    Vivi: What. The. Fu-
    Arthur: [horrified scream]
    • When Arthur starts shrieking, Lewis' expression goes from staring at the possessed Mystery in confusion to wordless bewilderment at Arthur's extremely cartoonish reaction. The amusingly deformed style that everyone is drawn in for that scene manages to make every single frame into comedy gold.

Other

  • Mystery's favorite food is listed as "........."Chicken"" in his character profile in what appears to be a darkly hilarious reference to biting off Arthur's arm. His favorite animal is also himself.
  • Arthur's profile calls him a "(Reluctant) Paranormal Investigator" and his favorite food is some kind of bizarrely awesome sounding pizza called "Surf's Up" which involves oysters and presumably other seafood.
  • In a post on Mystery Ben's blog regarding Rooster, he reveals that the chicken under his hat was supposed to be a logo of a chicken on his hat, but the animator doing the scene misinterpreted it as an actual live chicken. The rest of the team decided to roll with it and made it an actual character.
