Chihiro: You were listening to your pet fish just now, huh? Normally people do the talking.

For a revenge-driven story, that doesn't stop it from having moments of levity for the main characters.

    In General
  • The entire of Kunishige Rokuhira's character is this. Flipping the standard characterization of the protagonist's archetypal paternal figure on its head, he acts more like a child than his own son, impulsively buying fish despite having no means to care for them, shouting out to the sun for being too hot, and wearing funny t-shirts.
  • Whenever one of her caretakers carries Char on their back, she invariably offers to take over and switch positions if they get tired. Chihiro has no reaction to this, but Hinao is willing to humor the girl.

     Vs. Sojo Arc
  • Upon meeting Char, Chihiro eventually asks her if she has eaten recently. Before she responds, her stomach begins growling and she only wearily says "And there it is..." to Chihiro's confusion.
    • Upon asking what she would want to eat, she instantly responds "Tempura soba", before doubling back and excitedly asking if he really means it. Chihiro remains deadpan as he calls out her lack of social grace.
  • Azami is introduced seemingly shrugging off his hands being shredded blocking sorcerous attacks and punching out a set of bounty hunters to help out Chihiro. When Chihiro points out to him, he suddenly registers the pain and begins shrieking on the spot.
  • One of the bounty hunters (dressed in an intimidating hannya mask) openly calls off the fight when he sees Azami enter the fray, tells his opponent he's finished and instantly flees, leaving his two allies to their fate.
  • Amid the tense mental confrontation between Chihiro and Sojo during their second duel, the latter requests confirmation Chihiro is the son of Kunishige Rokuhira. Chihiro attempts to bluff him, but simply trails off and begrudgingly answers his questions as he recalls he already blurted it out to him during their first fight.

    Rakuzaichi Arc
  • Hakuri's first meeting with Chihiro, where his bizarre, forward way of introducing himself to Chihiro leads to him literally running away before he realizes he is a Sazanami. After this, realizing he will have to collaborate with Hakuri leads to a Reaction Shot where despite his face remaining unmoved, a small zoom on his flat expression adequately indicates just how unenthusiastic he is at the prospect.
  • Hiyuki can't remember the Kuregumo's name, and when Chihiro says it to reveal he broke the Sacred Blade, she excitedly gasps out the name... only to be completely shocked when she registers the second half of his statement.
    • After their fight, Hiyuki's adrenaline wears off and she quickly collapses, only to be caught by the jacket by Tafuku. She casually continues their conversation while Tafuku holds her up at a diagonal angle.
    • Tafuku, despite being the polite half of the duo he forms with Hiyuki, refers to Hakuri as "the dopey one" as he reveals he passed out.
  • Hinao is helping out the group by looking after Char while Chihiro and Shiba go on missions, which she is happy to do for them... since she has nothing better to do, as her cafĂ© was completely obliterated by Sojo and needs to be completely refurbished, leaving her without work.
  • A bit of dark comedy, but after Soya catches Hakuri mid-attempt to take his own life to escape him, he completely ignores why he would do this and instead chides his younger brother because Hakuri is very weak and wouldn't survive the fall.
  • In the background of Chapter 25's first panel, Soya calls out Hakuri's name as he falls through the sky after Shiba teleported him into the air. Hakuri and Hinao pay him no mind.
  • While preparing for the Rakuzaichi, Hiyuki and Tafuku stop to eat. We see a small fruit parfait and a massive plate of spaghetti delivered to them. An irritated Hiyuki switches the sweet to Tafuku as she grabs the pasta, noting they mixed up the order.
  • Hakuri instantly runs over to Chihiro when he calls his name twice in the same chapter, with the exact same paneling each time. The first time, a ball Char throws at him bounces off his head, and the second time Hinao has to grab an ice cream cone he absent-mindedly drops as he's handing it to her.
  • Soya explains to the rest of the Tou Chihiro's plan necessitating them to guard the Naginojoen cemetery. As the sister questions why their father wouldn't just tell them this outright, Soya bluntly states it wasn't hard to figure out, prompting an indignant "What the hell?" shrug from the sister who obviously didn't piece it together.
  • Cornered by his elder brother, Hakuri encourages himself to fight him off and be useful to the team... by imagining his pet praying mantis Samurai calling him a dumbass.
