Jujutsu Kaisen can get pretty grim, with questions of morality and purpose coming up as characters face off against all manner of disturbing creatures - but that doesn't mean it can't be downright hilarious sometimes!

  • Just how Laughably Evil the group of special grade curses and Suguru Geto can be with their bickering and Villains Out Shopping activities. It doesn't hide just how cruel and horrifying they are at all, but it sure gives them another depth besides just being evil.

Introduction Arc

  • When Yuji is reporting in on his grandfather's death, he states that his grandpa would be mad if he moped about it, so he'll just have to laugh while he burns the body. The lady at the desk is understandably appalled.
  • Gojo's introduction: he does a Stealth Hi/Bye on Megumi, takes a bunch of pictures of Megumi's beat-up face to show to the second-year students, and deadpans a "seriously" when Yuji says that he ate Sukuna's finger. Then he throws a bunch of kikifuku at Megumi (explaining that it was something that he was going to eat on the way home), which makes Megumi understandably appalled that he was shopping while people were dying, and proceeds to royally kick Sukuna's ass, starting with sitting on the guy like it's no problem. The strongest jujutsu sorcerer everyone.
  • When it's explained that Yuji doesn't specifically have to fight for him to fulfill his duty of eating Sukuna's fingers. He imagines what it would be like if he just hung out all day waiting for the others to bring him the fingers, which leads to an Imagine Spot of a beat up Megumi showing up at his doorstep with a new finger.
  • Yuji's first meeting with Principal Yaga:
    • When he meets him, Yaga is surrounded by a bunch of stuffed animals, completely contrasting with his tough image.
    • Yuji introducing himself to be as a person that is interested in girls like Jennifer Lawrence. Clearly, that does not fly with Yaga, so he presses Yuji some more before sending out one of his cursed corpses at him, which then goes to utterly destroy Yuji. Yuji's reactions are a sight to behold.
    • After being accepted in Jujutsu High, the doll wrangles itself out of Yuji's arms and punches him square in the cheek, making the poor boy do a complete backflip in defeat.
  • Even though Nobara understandably dismisses Yuji as a complete nobody, the next few shots show that she can behave in the exact same way as Yuji, such as getting excited over going to Tokyo only to see that they have to exorcise a curse once they get there.
    • Her first thought about Yuji upon meeting him is pondering that he probably ate his boogers as a kid.
Cursed Womb Arc
  • When the exit is blocked, Yuji and Nobara start to understandably freak out. Megumi has to tell them that his Divine Dog will get them out of there, which leads to Yuji and Nobara fawning over it. This makes Megumi annoyed until Yuji tells him that he's pretty reliable, which causes him to change his tune rather quickly.
  • Nobara being saved by Megumi's Toad makes for a hilarious image, especially since her head is poking out his Toad's mouth.
Nobara: I hate frogs, you know...
    Megumi: Yeah, well, sorry!
  • Yuji's plan for Sukuna to kill the Special Grade Curse for them very nearly backfires when Sukuna starts planning to set the Curse on Megumi, complete with an Imagine Spot with cartoon versions of him, Yuji, Megumi, and the Curse. The Curse instead attacks him, which fulfills Yuji's gambit, anyway.
    • The Curse itself is initially terrified stiff of Sukuna, who just casually pats its shoulder and tells it to wait a minute while he thinks of a way to get back at Yuji.
    • Sukuna regenerates Yuji's severed hand to effortlessly block the Curse's blast. By accident. He was actually going to leave it like it was just to give Yuji the finger.
Sukuna: Ah, shit. I healed this one, too.
    • On that note, the Curse's "Huh!?" reaction to Sukuna no-selling his attack should be a painting. Even funnier, Sukuna's own reaction to the Curse's attack is just a simple So you don't like walks?
  • In a particularly stunning case of Mood Whiplash, Maki coming up to Megumi and Nobara and telling them to stop looking like they're at a funeral... completely unaware of the fact that they're mourning Yuji's death. Panda and Toge tell her this fact after she already confronted them.
  • Megumi gives the standard introductions to the second-years, saying that the only one that he respects is overseas. Nobara calls him out for not giving any information on Panda other than that's his name.
Nobara: You're not adding more about the panda named Panda?
    • It appears to be the norm when introducing Panda, as it was similarly lacking in information when Gojo introduced Panda to Okkotsu.
      Gojo: Panda.
Panda: I'm Panda. Nice to meetcha.
      Gojo: Well. That's about it.
Okkotsu (thoughts): No explanation for the one I was most curious about.
Cursed Training Arc
  • Yuji and Sukuna meeting face-to-face in Sukuna's innate Domain. Starting with Yuji wanting to kick his ass for killing him.
Sukuna: This is the thanks I get for fixing your arm?
Yuji: Yeah, and you ripped out my heart right after that!
    • Their brief fight then ends with Sukuna kicking Yuji off a giant spine and sitting on him for good measure to issue a contract.
    • Which Yuji refuses to accept. Then Sukuna follows up, quite obviously begrudging, by adding that he won't kill anyone whenever he gets control.
      Sukuna: So annoying...
    • Black Comedy is at its finest here where Sukuna challenges Yuji to a duel to see if their contract will go through or not. The very second he agrees, Yuji gets the top of his head cut off and he suddenly revives, not remembering a single thing that just happened.
  • The first thing that Yuji says after he revives?
Yuji: Ah, my dick is hanging out!
  • When Gojo explains how cursed energy works, Yuji believes that he's going to learn a special jujutsu technique. Gojo bluntly tells that he can't, so in turn, he becomes a cartoonish MS Paint version of himself. Looks like someone on the staff has been watching too many Paint openings...
  • Yuji turns into a paper cutout of sadness with a vibrato'd voice after learning that jujutsu techniques are a genetic Superpower Lottery, and since he wasn't born with powers he won't ever be able to use anything as cool as Bankai or Rasengan. He only comes back to his senses when Gojo hypes him up, and even then Gojo's slightly annoyed by it.
  • Yuji automatically assumes that in order to use cursed power, you have to be constantly agitated. Then he goes on to assume that's why Megumi is snappy most of the time. Meanwhile, Megumi finds himself suddenly irritated, having apparently sensed the comment.
    • If you notice in the background, Panda is still flinging Nobara without a care in the world, almost causing injury to Toge.
  • Gojo decides to train Yuji through movies so that he'll be able to use cursed power in a manner that won't tire him out. The catch? Yuji has to keep a constant stream of cursed power through a cursed corpse that Yaga created or he'll get punched in the face. Needless to say, the first few attempts don't go well for him.
  • Jogo, quite literally, blows his top when Gojo calls him weak. He threw absolutely everything he had at the guy and nothing worked. Gojo even took time to explain his abilities and bring Yuji in to show him the fight. It was obvious that Jogo really is immensely powerful, but Gojo still looked as unbothered as a cat pawing at a toy lazily.
    • When Gojo brought Yuji to the fight, Yuji's first reaction is complete confusion about where they are, but then he sees Jogo:
Yuji: Mt. Fuji! His head is Mt. Fuji!
  • This bit as Gojo teaches Yuji about Domains in the anime, mostly because of Yuichi Nakamura's delivery:
Gojo: The techniques imbued in that Domain are guaranteed to hit within that Domain.
    Yuji: Guaranteed?!
    Gojo: GUARANTEED!
  • When Hanami interrupts to rescue Jogo, Yuji is caught by a branch and initially tells Gojo to leave him and go. Then the tree stump looking to eat him appears and his tune changes.
    • Yuji then gets on his knees to apologise for being the reason Jogo and Hanami got away, but blames Gojo for bringing him in the first place, not that Gojo is listening:
Yuji: I'm sorry about that. They managed to escape because of me. Though you're the one who brought me here, right?
  • Hanami makes it back to the curse's tropical base after saving Jogo's severed head from Gojo. He is greeted by Geto, who got back just a moment earlier and Mahito, who has been chilling on the beach for a while just reading a book under a parasol. Jogo's head would be steaming if he had any steam left. He had not, so he was only complaining.
    • The frankly surreal scene of Geto, Mahito and Hanami playing football on the beach...with Jogo's screaming head as the ball.
  • This exchange between Yuji and Gojo:
    Yuji: Ah, Gojo?
    Gojo: Go on ahead Yuji!
Yuji: (sheepishly) What's the exchange event?
Gojo: Eh? I didn't tell you?
  • Todo's first order of business? Ask Fushiguro what's his type of woman. When Fushiguro gives a fairly modest answer, Todo gets pissed and decides to beat the poor sucker up. He's even crying at Fushiguro's answer!
  • After Todo decides that it won't be as boring at the exchange event, he tells the others to tell Okkotsu to take part in the event. The others are pretty fed-up with Todo, so comes this goldmine:
Panda: What a pain. I panda, I no understand human speech.
    Inumaki: Salmon. note
  • Todo's important business in Tokyo: meeting up with Takeda-chan at a handshake event.
  • The sheer contrast between Miwa's exterior and her fangirl thoughts. Then when Gakuganji asks for her for tea, she practically jumps at the chance to get a selfie with Gojo, completely forgetting Gakuganji's tea in the process.
Vs. Mahito Arc
  • When Yuji asks why Nanami became a salaryman before he became a full-time jujutsu sorcerer, he proclaims that "jujutsu sorcerers are shit". He then goes on to explain that work is shit as well, and if both are equally shit; then he'll just choose the one that he's more suited for, which is the only reason that he came back to jujutsu. Gojo and Yuji lampshade that his reasons are rather cynical. It's even funnier in the anime, which quickly cuts to Nanami's firm expression as Kenjiro Tsuda practically shouts the statement.
  • While fighting Mahito, Nanami notes that he and Gojo are quite similar. Cue Nanami having an Imagine Spot of Gojo prancing through a field of flowers... while laughing that he's going to murder someone.
Kyoto Goodwill Event Arc
  • With everyone believing Yuji to be dead, Gojo decides they should make Yuji's return a surprise to the others. Yuji seems completely on board after hearing from Gojo that the kids' happiness and laughter from seeing him will lead to global warming being resolved.
    • Gojo wheels a giant box towards the students with Yuji hiding inside. When Yuji pops out, he strikes a pose, only to find Megumi and Nobara aren't smiling at all. Most likely dismayed by the fact after months of thinking he was dead, he and Gojo are treating his revival as a prank.
    • Bonus points for the Japanese culture joke that ends up being Lost in Translation: What Yuji actually shouts in the untranslated scene as he bursts from the box is "Oppapi!" in reference to Yoshio Kojima's comedy act, complete with striking the same pose from the dance routine. While Viz discards the reference entirely for a "Hah, gotcha!", the Jaiminis Box fan translation, wanting to find something similarly dated and groanworthy for a Western audience, settles for Yuji singing Wrecking Ball.
    • Next chapter later, Nobara has Yuji on his knees, holding a funeral photo frame up to his face as if he were still dead.
  • Aoi Todo is in full Blood Knight mode when he encounters Yuji during the Goodwill Event, literally stomping his head into a bloody mess. However, when Todo asks Yuji what kind of woman is his type, and Yuji replies a tall woman with a big ass, the exact same type of woman Todo is interested in, Todo does a complete 180. He immediately creates False Memories of him and Yuji attending school together, Todo giving a love confession to his favorite idol Takada only to get rejected by her, and Yuji treating him to ramen to cheer him up afterwards. Yuji is understandably confused when it cuts back to reality and Todo is weeping, snot dripping down his face along with tears, as he proclaims Yuji his best friend.
Todo: So you never lost anyone in your hometown, huh? You and I were destined to be best friends like we are.
Yuji: Hold on, you just learned my name!
    • In the flashback itself, there's this gem when Yuji asks why Todo thinks Takada will even accept his confession.
Todo: I remember something that Anne Sullivan said at one point to Helen Keller. She asked her, "What fool thinks of defeat before even trying?"
      Yuji: Uh, that was Inoki.
  • Right before her fight with Miwa, Maki acknowledges how much of Nice Girl she is when she apologizes for trying to kill Itadori and hearing how she wants to support her family. Dropping her tough girl persona for once, Maki sincerely asks if she's doing okay. And if she's getting along with Mai, much to Miwa's confusion.
  • "Useless Miwa", as she calls herself, picks up the phone, expecting it to be Mechamaru. Turns out that it's actually Inumaki and he instantly puts her to sleep. It was so potent, that she managed to sleep through the entirety of the Veil incident.
  • Todo uses his self proclaimed 530,000 IQ to run down Hanami's moves and then proclaims them to be no problem because he has Yuji with him. The pair charge as the OST revs up... only for it to die instantly as Todo's ankle gets caught by one of Hanami's branches, and he gets flung along the ground with the appropriate noises towards a group of spikes.
  • As awesome as it is, Todo conjuring up an image of Takeda-chan in his head to assist in his calculations to dodge Hanami's attack is admittedly hilarious.
    • In the same scene, Todo makes a variety of over-the-top expressions every time he activates Boogie Woogie, not unlike something you'd see in Jojos Bizarre Adventure.
  • The entire baseball game chapter, but special mention goes to when Todo shows up to bat. Maki deliberately pitches the ball directly at his face, and every student immediately congratulates her for it.
    • The manga even has a label to inform readers that Maki did in fact do this on purpose.
    • Yuji cradles Todo's body as his face is battered. Rather than ask if he's okay, Yuji just comments that everyone hates Todo.
    • The anime makes it better by adding introduction bars, with inane facts and hilarious statements:
Miwa: The mango she was letting ripen in the refrigerator is gone.
Mai: Hated mangoes, but got over it recently.
      Momo: Baseball experience: 2L.
Kamo: Practicing cursive. I can write my own name now.
Todou: Won the middle school nationals with Itadori. Itadori denies this.
Yuji: First impression of iekei ramen: "I poop a lot the next day."
Nobara: Awaiting approval for a credit card. Too hard for a high schooler, maybe?
Megumi: Prefers breast meat in chicken nanban and thigh meat in oyakodon.
Maki: The one thing she can't tolerate is protein powder.
Inumaki: Prefers bread for breakfast. Likes it with ham, cheese, and a bit of tabasco.
Panda: Wants to punch a zebra someday.
Death Painting Arc
  • Megumi reluctantly reveals that he went to Saitama Urami East Junior High, becoming well-known for the fact that he beat up all the punks in the general area, and then some. Yuji and Nobara instantly chastise him for keeping this from them.
  • Upon first encountering the two delinquents Nobara initially proposed beating them up, then nicknamed them Idiot A and Idiot B, and upon seeing them bow, she and Yuji preened about how they must recognise how great they were, only for their smugness to die when the delinquents greeted Megumi.
  • Yuji's reaction to hearing about the Yasohachi Bridge test of courage (which is explained to be bungee jumping off of it):
Yuji (his face simplified to just be a smiley face): I'm surprised there are people dumber than me!
  • Apparently when investigating Yasohachi Bridge, the Tokyo first-years launched Yuji off the bridge to understand how the curse works. Nitta, understandably, expresses horror at this revelation.
  • During his fight with Kugisaki, Eso mentions that he'll kill anyone who looks at his back. Yuji and Kechizu both suddenly appear directly behind him, and when Eso becomes furious, both of them apologize profusely.
  • With the end of the intense fight against Eso and Kechizu, the scene cuts to Mahito, Geto, and Choso... sitting at a table and playing a board game. Choso, at realizing his brothers were killed by Yuji and Nobara, crushes his piece in his hand, and Mahito's immediate reaction is simply to yell at him not to break the pieces.
  • Many come from the one shot issue It's Like That.
    • The anime adds a scene of Yuji asking Nobara to go to the movies with him. Specifically, Human-Earthworm 4. Not only does Yuji's pitch for the movie suck, but clips from the movie itself show it to be pure schlock.
Human-Earthworm: Who could ever love me? I'm no longer human.
Love Interest: You're more human than anyone else I know.
Kevin: [bursting into the cabin] It's a monster! Kill it!
Love Interest: Kevin, stop, don't! If we kill him, we're the monsters!
    • Aoi Todo and Mei Mei play a surprisingly intense game of ping pong as Todo talks about how, now that they've proposed Yuji become a Grade 1 Sorcerer, that he and Yuji will wind up on training missions together, saying it's their destiny. While he hypes himself up and his theme music swells, Mei Mei breaks the news that sorcerers who recommend colleagues for promotions are not allowed to accompany them on training missions, causing the music to cut out and Todo to freeze in place as he undergoes a comedic Heroic BSoD. He remains frozen in place even after Mei Mei wins the game, leaves, and turns off the lights behind her.
    • Nobara figuring out Yuko's feelings towards Itadori, complete with dramatic close-ups to each of them speaking intensely. The anime adds an Art Shift where they're horribly drawn during these closeups.
Nobara: Wait... Yuko, you mean... It's like that, right?!
      Yuko: Yes! It's like that!
      • The gag is repeated when Fushiguro is introduced to Yuko and he's able to catch on as soon as he finds out Yuko went to Junior High with Yuji.
Megumi: Oh, so it's like that, huh?!
        Nobara: Yeah! Totally like that!
    • Yuko asks if there's something going on between Nobara and Yuji.
Nobara: No. If hell froze over and danced the lambada? Still no.
      • Immediately afterwards Nobara's confused when she realizes her heart's skipped a beat.
    • Nobara has an Oh, Crap! moment when she realizes she hasn't told Yuji the girl she's with is Yuko. Given her growth spurt and weight loss, Nobara's terrified Yuji won't recognize her. She tries to introduce her quickly but...
Yuji: Wait a second, you're Ozawa. What're you doing here? What a coincidence.
[Nobara and Megumi both hold up scores giving him perfect 10s]
    • After Yuko decides not to tell Yuji about her crush on him, Nobara works out what her heart skipping a beat earlier meant and tells Fushiguro she's realized her own feelings.
Hidden Inventory arc
  • Gojo's return in the Hidden Inventory arc is awesome for sure, but the humor lies in how coming back from near-death clearly gave him a Power High, and Toji's reaction to it. Gojo is just laughing, grinning madly and tapping his head repeatedly, eyes wide as Toji gives him a look as if to say "is this guy okay?"
Shibuya Incident Arc
  • Haruta Shigemo gets an honorable mention as one of the series' most Laughably Evil villains.
    • In his first appearance during the Goodwill event, he gushes over having three girls for himself, completely disregarding the fact that they were his enemies. Then he makes a comical, chibified run for it as soon as Gojo destroys the barrier around the school.
    • In Shibuya, he bites his own tongue in the middle of taunting Nobara and torturing Akari. He later gets distracted, which Akari uses as an opportunity to crawl away; Haruta has a very child-like disappointed look when he notices that he no longer has a hostage.
    • Haruta tries attacking Nanami, to no effect except further enraging the sorcerer. It doesn't end well for him.
  • The anime adds a scene to the fight between Sukuna and Mahoraga where Sukuna gets thrown into a movie theater... and emerges with a cup of soda and a bucket of popcorn. It leads one to wonder what, exaclty, were the circumstances around his aquisition of those things. Did he take them from someone? Did the King of Curses help himself to some modern-era snacks out of curiosity?
  • During a flashback, we see Dagon slurping up dozens of humans, which would normally be horrifying if not for Dagon's googly-eyed design and Mahito clapping and cheering him on with a song that sounds like something a high school student would sing while his friend chugs alcohol. Dagon's burp after the fact is the cherry on top.
  • Mahito decides to split in two to better his chances of finding Yuji, and bars Jogo from pursuing with a Transfigured human barrier. The old Curse is not amused.
Jogo: (literally blows his top with rage) MAHITOOOO!
  • Nobara landing a withering burn on Mahito. It's even more savage if you hear it in English dub.
Nobara: Patch-face, was it you? Are you the special grade cursed spirit that's been messing with our idiot?
Mahito: [smiling bashfully with his eyes closed] Oh, my, my. Am I really that famous?
Nobara: Yeah, for running away like a little bitch. [laughs]
Mahito: [keeping the same expression] I like you. You seem worthy of killing.
  • During Todo's team-up with Yuji during his climatic fight with Mahito, the anime goes completely ham when Yuji throws a piece of rubble at Mahito for Todo to switch with and land a Black Flash on him, with visuals that looks like Todo is propelling himself through space out of sheer brotherly camaraderie towards Yuji, complete with a constellation of Yuji giving him a thumbs-up to cheer him on. It truly has to be seen to be believed.
  • Mahito's last encounter with Sukuna. The former arrogantly believes he is able to finish off Yuji before the latter can switch places with him and all Sukuna can do is stare smugly at him. He says absolutely nothing to Mahito, knowing damn well he is fucked as his constant torment of Yuji will lead to his own downfall.
  • As Mahito lunges at Todo after he managed to destroy his left hand and severely hit him, Todo’s necklace is revealed to have a photo of both Yuji and Takada-Chan. Mahito is so confused when this happens as Todo hallucinates Takada-Chan fighting Mahito with him whilst in her school uniform. The anime takes this a step further and adds one of the idol’s songs in the background.
  • Choso aggressively goes after "Geto" for tricking him into almost killing his other brother, which is revealed to be Yuji himself, leading to a very cinematic, intense fight. Panda and Yuji casually talk about this revelation in the background of it all.
Panda: So I'm just asking but...You're not actually related, right?
Yuji: Absolutely not, he almost killed me last time.
Panda: Todo considers you as a brother too. Do you emit some kind of strange pheromones?
Perfect Preparation arc
  • Tengen mentions that there are two objects that can save Gojo from the Prison Realm. Toji's Inverted Spear of Heaven, that Gojo either sealed or destroyed 11 years ago, and the Black Rope, that Gojo destroyed a year prior. Both Yuji and Megumi react similarly:
Tengen: But Satoru Gojo sealed the Inverted Spear of Heaven overseas 11 years ago... or destroyed it!
Yuji: Why'd you do that, Sensei?!
Tengen: And last year Satoru Gojo got rid of all the black rope!
Megumi: Why'd that guy do that?!
    • Also amusing is Yuuta in the background with an expression of "Yep, that's Gojo for you".
  • It's a fair bit of Black Comedy, but after the entire buildup to the Zenin Clan becoming a major obstacle to Yuji and his friends through their schemes, power plays and manpower, The Perfect Preparation arc has the entire clan wiped out to the last man, without any of them being able to inconvenience Megumi or Yuji in any major fashion, and both of them being unaware that the clan had decided to make themselves their enemies in the first place.
  • Having been belligerent and unwilling to listen for the entire time, once Hakari realises Megumi is head of the Zen'in clan, and therefore able to bring about the change he wants, he immediately changes his tune and wants to be buds with Megumi, going so far as to try and look cute, Panda style.
Culling Game arc
  • Yuji tracks Higuruma down, finding him taking a bath fully clothed.
    • Yuji asks Higuruma if they can talk:
Higuruma: I'm a lawyer, so talking to me costs 5,000 yen every half hour.
    Yuji: Uh...
Higuruma: I'm joking! I just wanted to play the money-grubbing lawyer for a change.
    Yuji: Oh...
Yuji (thoughts): There's something weird about this guy...
  • Takaba Fumihiko, full stop. His technique is Comedian, which makes it so anything he finds funny manifests into reality. So, this results in a failed stand-up comic in his thirties running around in a spandex superhero outfit, functionally immortal, doing Looney Tunes-style hijinks for his own amusement.

Idiot Survivor Arc

  • This whole arc is basically one long gag, being a fight between Takaba and Kenjaku. Even the millenium-old sorcerer can't counter Comedian's reality warping, so he's forced to try and outlast/outsmart it as he's pulled into a constant series of comedy sketches. It culminates in the duo doing a live stand-up routine together, where Kenjaku is the goofball to Takaba's straight man. By the end, Takaba is so happy he finally got live out his dream that after the scene ends, he's on the ground in burial garb, ready to die happy.

Shinjuku Showdown Arc

  • Despite being a fight to the death between two of the strongest sorcerers that have ever lived, Satoru and Sukuna still manage to sneak in some banter before it gets too heavy.
"I'm blaming you for the collateral damage."
"Yeah, like anyone would buy that."
(Internally) "Oh, right, Mei is broadcasting this!"
  • All the buildup to Higuruma using Judge Man on Sukuna is instantly thwarted when Sukuna straight up admits he's guilty. And the reason he does it? Because he was actually paying attention the first time in Yuji's body and simply because he wanted to see the Execution sword.
  • When Yuta and Yuji lay a decent beating on Sukuna, the latter asks in disbelief how they managed to improve their techniques in such a short amount of time. Yuji responds that it was the result of hard work and determination; Yuta straight up admits they were cheating.
