While "funny" isn't the adjective most often applied to Mitchell's music, her wit does show up on occasion in her work.

  • "Raised on Robbery" is a very funny song. Most of it consists of a rambling monologue that a woman tells a casual gambler at a bar in the course of trying to pick him up, or at least get him to pay for her drinks. What tops it off is that her pitch fails entirely and by the end of the song he's fleeing.
  • There's also a humorous anecdote in "Song for Sharon" from Hejira:
There's a gypsy down on bleecker street
I went in to see her as a kind of joke
And she lit a candle for my love luck
And eighteen bucks went up in smoke
