• Catarella. The well-meaning but over-enthusiastic desk officer, exuberant in his mannerisms even for an Italian, constantly mangling names and words and abusing Montalbano's office door. The prequel series shows he has spent years in the same position without a promotion.
• Some of the more barmy locals Montalbano has to deal with.
  • Montalbano's questioning reducing one man to tears. After everyone comes in to ask Montalbano what on earth he's up to, Montalbano calms the man down by asking him maths questions.
  • One older local is a bit of a Casanova and reacts to questions about what he witnessed with furtive glances and muttering about it being sensitive, forcing Montalbano to swear himself to secrecy every time.
  • A man walking his dog in the small hours overheard a crime and insists Montalbano look at just how sad his dog is.
