Chapter 1
- An executioner taking several swings to try and cut off Gabimaru’s head before the blade breaks off.
- During the fire execution, the guards try to stab him to death as a mercy kill. When the spear breaks against Gabimaru’s chest, he apologizes to them for it.
- He’s later locked back in his cell with his singed clothes and prods Sagiri for replacements.
Gabimau: Hey. Heeeeey.
Sagiri: My job is to record events. Your nudity is no obstacle. - Sagiri not giving a crap about the magistrate's failure to kill Gabimaru, cutting off their complaints with “I’m working."
Chapter 3
- Upon arriving on the island, Gabimaru causally snaps his restraints off, only for Sagiri to reprimand him for it. Yes Gabimaru, there’s a mandate for the prisoners to keep their restraints on throughout the whole suicide mission.
- In the middle of Sagiri re-tieing Gabimaru's hands, Warped Keiun socks Gabimaru in the head with a flail hard enough to bend his neck over and send him flying into a tree. As Keiun mocks the supposedly late shinobi, Gabimaru gets back up no worse for wear, leading to this exchange with Sagiri.
Sagiri: A-are you actually okay?
Gabimaru: Just dislocated my neck is all. - As Sagiri exposits on who Warped Keiun is, Gabimaru switches the subject to the fact that Keiun isn’t wearing any restraints. Kisho, Keiun’s executioner, says that he'll just bind him again when they get back to the ship, that no one else follows that rule because it's ridiculous and that Sagiri is idiotic to enforce and argue over something so petty. Sagiri is fuming while Gabimaru keeps going “See?”
- Gabimaru also raises his own hands up to Sagiri in the manga to drive the point home.
- Nonetheless, she still insists on binding Gabimaru’s hands even in the middle of Keiun charging at him.
- Warped Keiun bashing Gabimaru’s head with blunt weapons while the latter is binding his hands back up. Successfully at that.
- Gabimaru not taking Warped Keiun seriously at all by itself is hilarious. It’s coupled with Warped Keiun being utterly unaware of how blatantly screwed he is and excited that Gabimaru warrants testing for all of his weapons.
- Gabimaru’s response to the armor crafted unto Keiun’s chest (Manga only)Gabimaru:: Yep, he’s creepy.
- Right when it appears that Round 2 of the fight is about to start, the next scene is Keiun’s body skewered by all of his weapons as Gabimaru wearily walks away. Both of the Yamada are speechless.
- Not only that, Gabimaru points out to a stupefied Sagiri that his hands are now tied up. As if to say “See? This rule is dumb, but I’ll follow it anyway so you won’t keep complaining”. She has no choice but to begrudgingly affirm it.
Chapter 6
- Tamiya's reason for being sent to the island; Over a drink, a Daimyo who offered him employment doubted he could cut down a "real dragon". Tamiya snapped his cup and cut down the Daimyo's dragon plaque hanging on the gate to his mansion. And his gate.
Chapter 8
- Yuzuriha trying three times to seduce/get too close to Gabimaru, who wrestles her to the ground each time. The first two times is because he’s wise to a Kunoichi's tricks and doesn't trust her. He justifies the third after agreeing to a truce by saying he’s married.
- Genji now monitors over Yuzuriha with Senta after she killed his charge, Moro. He justifies it by saying she’s too dangerous to be watched over by one executioner, but Gabimaru and Sagiri can tell immediately that he just couldn’t resist her charms. The anime made extra emphasis on Yuzuriha’s chest during a flashback.
- Senta tries to introduce himself, but gets cut off by Yuzuriha. Even the textbox displaying his name gets layered behind her.
- Yuzuriha using Moro Makiya as a test dummy for the behavior of the islands' wildlife.
- When asked what her motivation for surviving is, Yuzuriha gives a story about her younger sister and how she became a ninja to raise money for her sake. However, she names the wrong valley in which the ninja she supposedly trained with operate. After that her story devolves into doodles as she lazily stumbles to make anything else up.Gabimaru: If you're going to lie, keep it short.
Chapter 10
- Gabimaru picked some ingredients from the forest to make Kitatsugan note for the group (And Yuzuriha complains about the meal being so shabby). After relaying his and Genji's discovery of a field of Samurai that got turned into plants, the group immediately assumes that he got the ingredients from those and Yuzuriha throws her food into his face.Gabimaru: I didn’t use those plants.
- Sagiri studied the Sōshin's biology and discovered that they have no genitalia. Something she was either reluctant to say or was trying to find the right words for until Senta finished for her. Yuzuriha follows up with;Yuzuriha: They’re dickless, right?
Sagiri: …
Chapter 13
- Gabimaru imploring Yuzuriha to assist him in fighting Rokurota. She keeps her promise; he's the fighter and she's in charge of intel. Gabimaru makes an eye twitch.Yuzuriha: Good luck Gabimaru! Don't lose now!
- In the anime, Yuzuriha makes a little fight song for him while tapping her knifes together.
- Senta, meanwhile, is pinned up a tree next to Yuzuriha.
Chapter 17
- Gabimaru kicking Hoko towards Sagiri, Yuzuriha and Senta for them to deal with while he chases Mei. This may or may not be him paying Yuzuriha back for her happily playing spectator while he fought for his life against Rokurota.
- Gabimaru: You guys deal with it.
Yuzuriha: Gimme a break!
- Yuzuriha obliges anyway and tosses Senta's glasses somewhere so he won't see her ninjutsu.
- Mei, a tiny, timid little girl, judo-throwing Gabimaru the Hollow into a tree.
- Once Gabimaru ties Mei up to tree, the very start of his interrogation makes the girl burst into tears.
- Gabimaru: She's crying.
Sagiri: Who wouldn't after that?
- Sagiri has Gabimaru take her down so she can comfort the child. Once Mei calms down some, Gabimaru thinks;"Target captured. Nice"
- Once the group meets back up, they get stumped about getting info from a sobbing child.
- Sagiri: Until she stops crying, it's a lost cause.
Yuzuriha: Who here's good with kids?
Everyone: ...
Chapter 18
- Yuzuriha understandably doesn’t trust the humanoid-talking tree when it offers them info on the Elixir of Life. Until it says its home has a bath.Yuzuriha: (Pumping her fists through the air) Bath time~! Bath time!!
- By the time they get there, she adamantly puts the bath in higher priority anbove any more exposition.Yuzuriha: Talking comes later!! First bath time!!
Gabimaru: Sure, go on. Not like this is urgent. - Yuzuriha seductively inviting Gabimaru to the bath.Gabimaru: No.
- Sagiri on the otherhand does join Yuzuriha, saying she’s taking over monitoring duties from Senta since he won't join in. But not only is she wearing a towel, she practically melts when she gets in the bath before she can finish her excuse.
- Gabimaru and Senta end up being the only ones trying to focus on the mission. Emphasis on "trying" in Senta's case. He resists drinking anything until they find out more about Hoko... who offers them a bunch of fruit. Senta proposes learning more about the island while his mouth is watering.
Chapter 19
- Gabimaru scaring Mei by pointing a sword at her. He genuinely didn't mean to be threatening and apologizes.Yuzuriha: Ugh, you're the worst.
Chapter 20
- Tenza, in the middle of introducing Nurugai to his amazing master Shion, gets repeatedly smacked in the head by Shion's sword for his sloppy sword-play against Zhu Jin.
- Shion casually referring to Nurugai as "her", to Tenza's surprise. Shion then ruins any amazement Tenza had over this with his eye puns.
Chapter 21
- Sagiri was nodding on and off after her bath when the group was speaking to Hoko. And she refuses to admit.
- Sagiri: I was not.
Gabimaru: Was too.
Sagiri: (Obnoxious.)
- As Gabimaru and Sagiri talk more about the island's mysteries, they walk in on Mei with her towel on.
Chapter 22
- Gabimaru casually taking his clothes off for a bath while Mei is crying a storm, completely ignoring the presence of a little girl because everyone in his village bathed together.
- Sagiri takes issue and sets up a bathing arrangement for both them based on Edo's bathhouses.
- Gabimaru making Mei feel better about her scar results in a very skeptical and bewildered look on Sagiri's face. The sight of him saying something respectful is something that takes time to process for her...
Chapter 23
- Zhu Jin’s response to meeting Gabimaru by Lord Tensen's gate… is drop to their knees and sigh in exhaustion. They would just rather not deal with more humans for today and straight-up asks Gabimaru if he could leave.
Chapter 30
- Chobe, after escaping Lord Tensen’s assimilation pit, is too pissed to listen to Toma.
- Toma: Brother...
Chobe: I’ll kill the bastards, Toma.
Toma: No, we ought to flee this island and tend to our wounds.
Chobe: I’ll kill the bastards.
Toma: B-but...
Chobe: (Turns to him) I’ll kill the bastards.
Toma: Sure, okay.
- Chobe justifies Tensen's weakness with how much like plants they were.
- Chobe: Makes sense to hit em' at the roots, not the stems.
- Toma silently praises his brothers' deduction, telling his Chobe that he "needs to chew on this". Chobe took that response literally and pulls out a severed arm from the pit.
- Chobe: Finally ready to chow down on some monster meat, are ya?
Toma: That's not what I meant! Also, that's no monster...
Chobe: C'mon, just a few bites. Gotta keep up your strength right? (Opens his mouth)
Toma: BROTHEEEER!!!
Chapter 32
- Gabimaru and Tamiya slaughtering Sōshin to practice using Tao. Mei keeps saying they’re doing it wrong.
- Tamiya: I don’t get it! How’s this though?
Mei: Strong, strong. No.
Tamiya: Or this!?
Mei: Strong, strong.
