The elderly siblings, Creb (the holy man) and Iza (the medicine woman), bickering like small children over what to do about Creb's toothache.
During Jondalar and Thonolan’s meeting with the Hadumai in The Valley of Horses, the visibly elderly Haduma starts pointing at Jondalar and saying something they can’t understand. Tamen attempts to translate and it comes across to Jondalar and Thonolan as Haduma wanting Jondalar to make a baby with her. Thonolan starts howling with laughter that his brother is so universally desired by women that even old crones want him, while Jondalar awkwardly asks if Haduma is certain the Great Mother could still bless her with a child. At this point, Tamen realises the misunderstanding and explains Haduma wants Jondalar to sleep with and – Mother willing – impregnate her great-granddaughter, who has recently become a woman.
In The Valley of Horses, Jondalar starts flirting with a rather short woman named Cherunio at a Mother Festival, prompting an onlooker to chant: "There's Jondalar so big and tall, he could have had his pick of all. Cherunio is sweet, but small. He'll break his back, or maybe fall."
