The Movie

  • The Distant Prologue with the racist hotel manager is both Funny and Awesome. At first who appear to be a random Chinese family get turned down despite their reservations, so they make a call to the hotel's owner and casually buy the entire hotel.
  • For all of her smarts, Rachel can be a bit of a ditz.
Nick: Rachel, we've been dating for over a year now, and I think it's about time people met my beautiful girlfriend. What about us taking an adventure East?
Rachel: You want us to get pork buns in the East Village.
Nick: No, I mean further east.
    Rachel: Like Queens?
  • Let's be real, we could easily fill this page with quotes from Peik Lin (Awkwafina) and cousin Oliver (Nico Santos), who steal the film with their flawlessly comic timing and delivery. A few examples:
    • Peik Lin telling Rachel to ditch her traditional red dress:
"Tonight you need to not look like Sebastian from The Little Mermaid."
    • Oliver on how to make dumplings:
"You put the Botox in the face then pinch, pinch, pinch."
    • The chicken-clucking scene.
      "Bok-bok, bitch."
      • After being turned away by Eleanor at the reception, Rachel mutters, "Bok-bok... okay."
    • Peik Lin on dutiful children: "Chinese sons think that their moms fart Chanel No. 5."
  • Then there's Peik Lin's dad Wye Mun, who introduces himself with a horribly broken Engrish accent before confessing:
"[laughing] I'm just kidding. I don't have an accent, I'm just messing with you. No, no, I studied in the States too. Cal State Fullerton."
    • Which doubles as a comedic Genius Bonus for Asian teens whose parents don't think a Cal State school is prestigious enough...
  • Peik Lin's mom invites Rachel into their house that is absolutely decked out in gold Rachel has a hard time processing it all. Peik Lin's mother claims that they were inspired by the Hall of Mirrors in Versailles.
Peik Lin: (whispering) And Donald Trump's bathroom.
    Rachel: Really?
    Peik Lin:(nods)
Rachel:(awkwardly) The gold is very... brilliant.
  • Rachel's mom picking her a red dress to wear for when she meets Nick's parents, because red is a lucky color. When Peik Lin and her family not only point out that she CAN'T wear a dress like that to meet the Youngs but also say that the color is too on the nose, Rachel asks if red wasn't supposed to be lucky.
Wye Mun: Yeah, if you're an envelope!
    • Also funny is that her mother rejected a blue and white striped dress because those together are what is worn to a funeral, later when Astrid and Rachel are on the beach together the fashion icon Astrid... is wearing a blue and white striped shirt.
  • Wye Mun's jab's at Peik Lin, Rachel, and PT at the dinner table. The best however, has to be...
So let me get this straight, you both (Peik Lin and Rachel) went to the same university, but one of you came back with a degree that's useful... and the other came back as Asian Ellen.
  • Peik Lin makes it clear she doesn't mind dropping off Rachel at the Young estate because it's her only chance to see the mansion up close. Before that, however, she assumes Rachel gave her the wrong address...
Peik Lin: Are uh... are you sure you gave me the right address?? Like you copied and pasted it?
Rachel: Yeah, I did, I'm sure...
Peik Lin: ...Did you just copy and paste "jungle" and throw that in there too?
    • Upon getting to the front door of the Young estate, Nick walks out and Peik Lin has this to say...
Peik Lin: Daaaaaaaamn Rachel, he's like the Asian Bachelor!
    • When Rachel becomes caught up in being reunited with Nick, Peik Lin not-so-subtly reminds Rachel she's still there...
    Peik Lin: Psst. Rachel. RACHEL.
    • And then Nick invites Peik Lin inside:
Nick: Do you want to stop by for dinner?
Peik Lin: Oh no, I couldn't impose.
    Nick: It's not a problem.
Peik Lin: I had some dinner plans—
    Nick: Seriously, we've got—
Peik Lin: YEAH I'LL FUCKIN' COME TO DINNER.
Rachel: You have a cocktail dress in your trunk?
Peik Lin: I'm not an ANIMAL, Rachel.
  • Araminta's bachelorette party begins with a gentle paean to the girls' shared bonds of sisterhood and getting in touch with their inner nature, before abruptly jumping into an all-expenses-paid shopping spree.
Amanda: Aren't you going to join in?
Rachel: I don't want to lose an arm.
  • Rachel's Costume-Test Montage, with running commentary from Peik Lin and Oliver.
    • From the same scene, Oliver tells Rachel it's about time someone stood up to Eleanor. "Well you, not me, God. She can't know I was over here."
  • Oliver introduces himself to Rachel. He says that he gives anything the Youngs want, including a rare Cambodian gong. Rachel asks why they would want a rare Cambodian gong. Cue said gong ringing.
