  • Bukhanovsky's insightful jab at Burakov and Fetisov.
Bukhanovsky: Thank you both... and may I say that, together, you make a wonderful person.
  • It's almost completely overshadowed by the heartwarming speech immediately afterward, but the lighthearted jab Fetisov gives Burakov in regards to his open displays of emotion is both this and heartwarming at the same time, especially since this is immediately after Burakov had spent quite some time in a sanitarium as a result of the Ripper case:
Fetisov: (coyly placing a box of tissues on Burakov's desk) I brought these from Moscow. They're fantastic.
  • Burakov comes up with a plan to have soldiers assigned very visibly at almost all train stations except a few in the region where the killer operates, in order to force him to stalk at those and make him easier to catch. Fetisov gives this briefing to the soldiers:
Fetisov: We intend to have a visible uniformed presence twenty-four hours a day in every single train station within fifty miles of Rostov. Every station except three. The three smaller stations on the Matievs line in the Katma forest. There we will have only undercover men. There we want him to make his next attempt to kill one of our children. In order for this plan to work, we need you to do a job: We need you to accost anyone who stops to talk to a child or a young woman. Anyone who stops to talk to any stranger at all. We need you to demand their identity cards, and ask their business, and take down their answers in your notebooks. We need you to search them. And above all, we need you to do this visibly. We need everyone in the station to notice. Understand?
    Troops: *a few nod quietly*
    Fetisov: What's that, I didn't hear that.
    Troops: (speaking) Yes, Comrade General.
    Fetisov: Again.
    Troops: (shouting) Yes, Comrade General!
Fetisov: Do you think you are capable of performing these tasks?
    Troops: Yes, Comrade General!
Fetisov: Do you think you are capable of performing them without subtlety?
    Troops: Yes, Comrade General!
    Fetisov: Without discretion?
    Troops: Yes, Comrade General!
    Fetisov: Without tact?
    Troops: Yes, Comrade General!
Fetisov: *winks aside at Burakov, beat* Good.
