  • "There's a thesaurus in the library, yeah's under 'Y.' Go ahead, I'll wait."
• The Pin's mother serving lunch to him and Brendan, a quite jarring reminder of how old they actually are.
• When Brenden goes to see Dode, he gets Dode to talk by punching him out and then scares Dode's stoner friends into not retaliating. Brenden proceeds to beat on Dode some more while they watch until Dode finally gives him what he wants. As Brenden leaves, one of Dode's friends shouts "Yeah, and stay out, maaaan!"
• One of the most distinctive traits of the movie is the hardboiled dialogue characterized by a cynical attitude and slang. When complimented on this manner of speech by the assistant vice president of the school, Brendan replies that he learned it from Mrs. Kasprzyk, a "tough but fair" school teacher, in "Accelerated English" classes.
