Book

  • Kyle's efforts to find a girlfriend over the internet. He uses the magic mirror to see the people he's chatting with; to his dismay, the alleged "teenage girls" he's speaking to include several older men, a police officer (whom Kyle hopes is just trying to catch online predators), a forty-something housewife (who asks for nudes), and a very young girl (who yells "You're not my mother!" when Kyle warns her to stop pretending to be an older girl to pick up guys).
  • Every time Kyle uses Purple Prose, he lamp shades how corny it must sound coming from him.
  • One time, Kyle tries to use the mirror to talk to Kendra, and it takes a moment for her image to appear:
"Why does the mirror take so long to show you to me, but others I see instantly?"
"Because sometimes I'm doing something you shouldn't see."
    "Like what? In the bathroom?"
    She scowled. "Witch things."
"Right. Got it." But under my breath, I sang, "Kendra's on the potty."
    "I was not!"
  • Kyle invites Linda to join him for his sessions with Will, explaining that they're reading Shakespeare's sonnets. When Linda shows interest, he tries to impress her by recalling one of the many passages he's memorized in his confinement; all he can think of is, "Shakespeare's great." (And then thinks to himself, "Duh. Shakespeare's cool, man.")
  • The night before his first lesson with Lindy, Kyle wakes Will up at 6 in the morning to help him learn everything ahead of time, so he can impress her. Will tries desperately to brush him off.
"You just want to go back to bed."
"I do want to go back to bed. But I don't just want to go back to bed." He started to close the door.

Film

  • In the film, pretty much everything Will says.
    • Even some of his non-speaking scenes are pretty funny: he can barely contain his laughter at the syrupy, romantic language Kyle uses when he presents the greenhouse to Lindy.
  • Kyle walking in on Lindy, catching a glimpse at her social media posts whining about the situation. In order to hide it, she closes the webpage down - revealing that her background is the picture of her and Kyle pre-transformation. Much bumbling around from both of them ensues.
    • Kyle's offended Jaw Drop, as though wondering "Who is this guy?" There's an element of humor that Kyle has been cursed for so long that months later, he's all but forgotten he used to look like that.
  • Kyle's early efforts to try to woo Lindy. Believing she'll be Distracted by the Luxury, he tries gifting her with a designer handbag and a diamond-studded keychain from Bulgari. When she rejects both, he gives Zola his credit card and tells her to "Go to Barney's, get Manolos or whatever sick expensive kind Sloan and her bimbots loved."
    • His second effort is equally poorly thought-out: he decides to bring Lindy a box of Jujyfruits, but is afraid his appearance will frighten her — so he puts on black gloves and a ski mask and quietly sneaks up the stairs. And then spies on her through the railing.
    • Not only does Lindy not scream when she notices Kyle, but he's more startled than she is. And then she lampshades what a stupid move he made.
  • There's something darkly funny about the flowering tree tattoo on Kyle's arm — the symbol of his hated, disfiguring curse — lighting up with Christmas lights and a star during the holiday season. Kendra is quite the snarky witch.
  • When Kyle is following Lindy, there's a moment where she has headphones in and is singing out loud. Then she realises she's doing this in public, hugely embarrassed.
  • In a deleted scene, after Linda says "I've seen worse", we see Kyle go up onto the New York Bridge to literally cheer for the whole world to hear: "SHE'S! SEEN! WORSE!"
