• In-universe in book 4, when Teddy's suffered a black eye from a new student and doesn't want Val to know something particular about the bully. Before she finds out the truth (that Sparky's a girl), she briefly considers the idea that he got beat up by someone a great deal shorter than him, and despite her best efforts, the mental image of Sparky being just two feet tall — no bigger than their little dog Jocko — gives her the giggles.
• In book 6, early in the morning, Tiny the piglet starts squealing for his breakfast and waking up everyone except Val (who's already up). A yawning Doc asks what the noise was and, when told, says "Just what this house needs — an alarm pig."
