Funny / A Tree Grows in Brooklyn

• In the movie, near the end on Francie's graduation day, when Herschel tries to ask her out. What makes it funny is Francie's apparent ignorance of what's going on — the key word being apparent, she's trying to "play hard to get" — plus Sissy and Katie's reactions.
• Sissy's husband "John", who puts up with her ridiculous claims of being pregnant (she's faking it because she wants to adopt a baby) and her refusing to call him by his real name (it's a Running Gag that she calls all her lovers John, whether that's their name or not) when she finally has her first natural child. He has a meltdown and rants about his name is really Steve (with Punctuated Pounding), then has an abrupt change of mood and goes out to buy everyone ice cream to celebrate.
• Francie's attempt to get Katie to scold her, which entailed her buying a black lace underwear set. Katie reacts... actually, she doesn't react much to them at all.
• When Francie shows pictures of her family to her co-workers, they all think they're cute. When Francie shows a picture of herself standing on the roof, one girl says "The roof's cute."
• Johnny decides to take Francie, Neeley, and Little Tilly (one of the neighbors' kids) on a fishing trip to Canarsie. He starts out by falling into the water up to his neck while trying to board the rowboat he has rented, then manages to catch absolutely nothing all day long. The kids end up sunburned and seasick by the time Johnny finally packs it in, but it takes a while before they get back to dry land because Johnny knows nothing about rowing and he's now got blisters all over his hands. Tilly falls in the water while climbing out of the boat, and Johnny buys some fish to take home so he can pretend that he caught them himself. All three kids throw up on the trolley ride home, Katie freaks out over Johnny's ruined suit, and Tilly's mother freaks out upon seeing the state of her. Tilly just smiles and tells Johnny, "T'anks." After going to bed that night, Francie and Neeley silently laugh themselves silly over the image of Johnny falling in.
