Several of the Darkling Lords exhibit actual mental issues—Lexor's constant lies, Cravex's explosive temper, Cindarr's apparent slowness of thought (some sort of schizophrenia or ADD?)—and arguably Virulina's cruel manipulativeness and Mortdredd's slavish devotion to Darkstorm could be considered pathological. Well, technology isn't just machines...it's also pharmaceuticals. How many millions of people suddenly had their mood-stabilizing drugs and antipsychotics wear off out of the blue without any means of replacing them? As far as we know people didn't become aware of the presence of magic until Merklynn introduced the Visionaries to it, after all.
