Though it's never stated explicitly, the Nali's spiritual and pacifistic nature may be a direct consequence of a dark past which includes stuff like a gladiatorial arena with torture chambers inside of it, a sacrificial temple with plenty of traps, and huge castles with torture devices in their dungeons.
