Charters and Caldicott suddenly showing themselves to have excellent gun skills during the climax seems odd, until you consider that two middle-aged Englishmen in 1938 would most likely be World War I veterans. Charters has a clearly visible scar on his right cheek to support this interpretation; Basil Radford, who played Charters, had actually served on the Western Front, which is where he got the scar.
