Fridge Brilliance

  • If Miles isn't possessed then his kiss to Miss Giddens has a good reason. Mrs Grose implies that Quint and Jessel didn't care if the children saw them doing it in the house. By way of Children Are Innocent, Miles saw Quint kissing a woman he was with in a passionate way - and was simply imitating it with a woman he found attractive (he frequently tells Miss Giddens how pretty she is).
  • More brilliance; Miles's only male role models were Peter Quint and his own uncle. Quint is implied to be quite The Casanova and Mrs Grose says that the uncle was always able to charm her. Miles is a charmer too because he grew up seeing two other men go about things that way, knowing it'll work.
    • The way he grabs onto Miss Giddens's neck and starts choking her. Quint was abusive to Miss Jessel, so it's likely that he 'greeted' her the same way multiple times. Miles is again copying something he assumed two lovers did.
  • When Miss Giddens calls off lessons and has them pretend it's Flora's birthday, notice how Flora's crying stops at once. Also compare how contrived her 'fight' with Miles is in the school room. It could have been a little plan between them to get the day off, so they could cause mischief.
  • Mrs Grose says that Quint and Miss Jessel didn't care if she or the children walked in on them doing it in the rooms. Of course they wouldn't care; the Uncle doesn't bother about the house, and they'd have very little reason to fear him dismissing them over that.

Fridge Horror

  • Miss Giddens believes Peter Quint and Miss Jessel wish to relive their relationship by possessing Miles and Flora. Two 10 and 8-year-old children that are brother and sister.
  • Flora is already driven to near madness after Miss Giddens tries to get her to say Miss Jessel's name. How much worse is she going to be when she learns that her brother died alone with Miss Giddens?
    • Another film adaptation shows that Flora ended up in therapy - and that she tells the story to her support group.
    • And if you take the original planned opening into account - at Miles's funeral! - Miss Giddens is shunned by everyone.
