The striking Alice being married to the penniless, obese Ralph looks like a complete mismatch on its face. However, it makes more sense when you consider that Alice has a miserable, domineering mother who has a complete hold on Alice's life. It is possible that Ralph may be the only man in Alice's life who was willing to put up with that.
Alice's life without the laugh track is pretty depressing if you think about it. She is basically a prisoner in that tiny apartment, and married to a paranoid, verbally abusive loudmouth.
